When I got pregnant with the Boo, I stopped drinking soda. I started again when I was pregnant with the Pib and never quite stopped. The caffeine helped with my migraines. And then the Little Miss came along and all I wanted were Coke Slurpees. Seriously. I even bought bottles of coke to freeze at home when I was too tired to go out. Now I’ve decided to forgo sad again, since the high fructose corn syrup really bothers me.
But throughout everything, the one drink that I refused to give up. And that is sweet tea. No, not just any old sweet tea. Store bought sweet tea just isn’t quite…right.
Any down home southern girl has their own way for making the perfect sweet tea. And I’m no different. I tried quite a few variations and this is the one that I find works the best for me. Now-as a disclaimer-I will say that I like SWEET tea. Not sweet dainty “a spoonful of sugar” sweet tea. More like “dump the sugar bowl in” sweet tea.
Here’s how ya do it!
This is for making one gallon. I buy the big jugs in the store and then reuse the container for mixing.
Boil some water in a saucepan. Doesn’t matter how much or what size saucepan. You’ll see why in a minute.
Once the water boils, throw in 3 family sized tea bags. I like Louisianne tea (I also make the decaf variety since caffeine doesn’t sit we’ll with my nursling.) Heres the trick that makes this tea the beat ever! Wen you throw in the bags, add a pinch of baking soda. It takes away that weird bitter after taste that some teas have.
Let the tea bags steep for at least 10 minutes or as long as you want.
Wile that’s steeping, put your sugar into your container. I love the fructose granules from the Whole Foods bulk bins, but any sugar will do. I use 3 cups for a gallon. Like I said SWEET tea.
Funnel the tea into your galling container and shake or stir. One the sugar is dissolved, you’re done!
I use some old glass drink bottles to store it since I like having portable drinks on hand.
And there you have it. The BEST sweet tea in the south. Sure to draw the mosquitos right in. ;)
