BLARGH! Okay, so this time the fail was not mine…entirely. I had this all ready to go yesterday and I hit the post button…and wordpress decided it knew better than me and saved it as a draft.
Sigh. So, I’m posting it now, since it was supposed to go up Saturday.
Time for another author spotlight! Today, I bring you the glory that is Kittynaz! I found her through her story In The End…I was intrigued. Totally. And now I wait quite impatiently for any updates. She has a slew of other stories as well, not just in the True Blood/SVM genre. I haven’t ventured too much into those, but I did skim enough to know that they’re very well written (just like In The End) and if I was a part of those fandoms I’d be reading them ravenously. :o) So, let’s go hear what she’s got to say!
Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Wendy Brandibur aka Kittyinaz, since all my fans can find me on Facebook anyways.
So, tell me a little about yourself.
What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
Read and mess around with my puppy. He is getting big, but demands alot of attention. I am also learning photoshop so I can do my own banners. Also looking for new music for me.
What are some things you never leave home without?
iPad if going somewhere for long, iPhone ALWAYS. Music. And to make notes if an idea comes to me.
What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
Books. Yeah. Let’s go with over 1,000 paperbacks in the house alone. But here are some if the more notable authors that come to mind: David Eddings, Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffrey, Nora Roberts, Robert Adams, Piers Anthony, David Weber and the list will go on and on… and all of them have been reread many, many, MANY times. In fact I am starting to replace the falling apart ones with ebooks, or ones that Connor decides are worthy enough for his teeth. However, we are making a library room to remove that temptation and to remove the books from the dining room and living room.
Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
Hmm. This is hard to answer as above. Before you go off thinking I have tons of money, there is a place in Tucson, where I am from, called Bookman’s. We got in on the ground when DVD’s came out and his parents gave us all their VHS and what we had and traded them in. The trade credit from there financed the books and movies. The Blu-Rays, yeah that’s all me, I like to have them. They don’t scratch. Plus they come with that added bonus of being free on iTunes.
My favorite TV show right now is Once Upon A Time. I love Vampire Diaries, but often wait for the end of the season so I have time to watch. I loved Friends (have all but one season), Doctor Who, just not the current Doctor, Torchwood, Inuyasha and probably more than I can list.
My Favorite Movies? # 1~> You’ve Got Mail. I can recite the thing line for line. As bad as Star Wars but I have plenty of childhood years of being exposed to it for that excuse. And Alice 2009. Not sure if that should be a tv show or movie, but LOVE it. And I figure if you redo the movie and have to watch it that many times to get all the script right, then keep watching it after that, then it’s true love.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Oh my, 3?? Alexander of course, because he has an easy way with him., Ian Somerhalder (which shouldn’t surprise any of my readers!) for the same reason. Though I might have better romance luck with Alex!! And the last one? hmmm. That’s hard because I love Colin O’Donogue and what I’ve seen of him, but Peter Facinelli cracks me up. Then there is Jackson Rathbone… Dang. Only 3??? We need to renogotiate this…
What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Honestly? Pittsburgh. I was born there and haven’t been back since the Steel Mills shut down. My story Tea Shoppe is based there and it just brings back the memories. The other places would be England and New Zealand.
Do you have any pet peeves?
Yes. I wrote about this on my Fanfiction Wall in fact!! People who are short sighted. It’s a big world out there, and God has filled it with many types. How dare anyone think they are better than anyone else. I don’t get riled up about much, and am usually shy in person. But if I see someone being this way, I will stand up for the other person(s).
Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I am a huge Steelers Fan. Born in Pittsburgh and brought home on Superbowl Sunday. No one paid attention to me until after they won. My husband is a Denver Broncos fan, so our household gets interesting during playoff season.
Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
I couldn’t pick one. So I answered them all. :)
Chocolate or vanilla? Vanilla.
Silver or gold? Silver
Apple or PC? PC for my personal computer, but Apple for my phone, tablet and music.
White wine or red wine? Neither. Rose
Liquor or beer? Liquor. Can’t stand the taste of beer
Coffee or tea? Tea.
Sleep in or get up early? umm Sleep in, but if it is a choice of getting there earlier and leaving earlier, I will get up early.
Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?
In 2010. I first started out because I had broken my leg, pulled all the tendons in the same foot and sprained my ankle/foot on the other side all in a fall in May. I ended up needing surgery so was out for a long time. I started to read fanfiction because we couldn’t afford any more books, and I was reading about 3-4 a day. Twilighted was rec’d so I went there. I tried to publish there with the encouragement of a writer, but got rejected. Multiple times. I didn’t try until 8/27/2010 again.
Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
I write for the following: Once Upon A Time, Twilight, Vampire Diaries/Twilight Crossover, Tin Man, Alice 2009. I would probably write in a few others, but I need to finish some!!!
What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I use my computer to write on. Pen on paper drives me nuts and I give huge Kudos to those that can do it! And music has to be playing.
Ever write in your PJs?
Yep. Most of the time. I am unemployed, so don’t see the need to change when my PJ’s are mostly lounge pants and either t-shirts or thermals.
How bout naked? :o)
No. I have pets. A puppy. Who is still learning to not bite. And cats who have no regard if what’s under their paws (aka claws) is skin or clothing.
Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Everywhere. Truly. I live in a world of music, when I am not listening to my mix of Linkin Park, Lifehouse, Switchfoot, OneRepublic, Led Zepplin, Darius Rucker and the thousands of songs I have for me, then I am listening to instrumental music. EVERYWHERE I go, I have music playing. Have since I was little. And I multitask. So I can be reading, listening to music, watching a movie (And yes I have done all the above along with homework and talked on the phone or on the computer all at once). So many things can combine into a story all at once. Or I dream them. Once Upon A Time happened that way. Awesome dream. :P
Do I put real life into my stories?
I have in Tea Shoppe. On the FanFiction site, it tells you when and where the real life kicks in. Otherwise, if it something that I personally know about, I use my life experiences to help flesh it out but I write with some fantasy characters and try to make their lives their own.
Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
No. I try to edit on a schedule, but only once have tried to write a story in a period of time. I failed that challenge, but am still working on the story. When I write, I just…write. Editing takes that and adds tons of details along with making my cardboard cutouts move and talk. This way I have chapters banked in case I get stuck on a story. If I didn’t vent my frustrations on Facebook, no one would know I am upset. There are usually that many chapters banked ahead. What If is the only story with a Beta that is out of banked chapters, and that is because someone stepped up and offered to Beta for it. She keeps me on track so she is freaking awesome. Which reminds me I need to bank some chapters for her.
Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I tried that whole planning out thing. It doesn’t work for me. I just have a plan or something I aim towards and then it feels like the characters shove me out of the way and start writing their own stories. Seems the readers love it when it happens.
How do you deal with potential writers block?
ugh. tough one. Right now Godric is pissing me off in my main story. He went left when I was planning right and has messed with my mind. A case of the character taking control of his story. I have plenty of stories to catch up on, and sometimes work on another one until I can deal with the problem one.
Or I talk with my main Beta. She is freaking awesome and is willing to stop and help out. She is so awesome that she has carte blanch on my site and stories. You have to see the conversations we have had on Facebook. Hours sometimes. And I have to admit, we have gotten off the stories to talk about something else. But we like the same ships and shows, and in fact that inspired the whole I want to Beta for you thing. So she really helps me past the blocks, and helps with the storylines.
Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Songs. I find a song for each and every chapter to listen to over and over until it is done. When I go back to edit the chapters it can be on shuffle, but for the song, it has to be on repeat.
Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
Not really. Like I said, once the characters take over, it becomes their story. I think it is theirs to begin with, but I need to connect with them better. I actually have issues in putting genres on my stories. They are normally romantic, but they have adventure, angst, True Blood has horror and torture. There is no true spot I can place them in. So I often play eeni miney moe for that part.
What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Nothing. Well, my own OCD, but not really anything. I have the greatest fans who have been there for me no matter what. I have found some awesome people through my writing and they have supported me through some really bad situations these past years.
Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Songs lately have been the source for the names. But that is recent. Before then, I stressed on names. Obviously when my first was called Alice and Hatter. LOL. But since then alot of the chapters later on in that story and for sure the rest of my stories are from lines in the songs. I also have been known to slip in lines from the songs into the stories.
But songs actually define the stories in my head. What If by Safety Suit is Alice and Hatter. It mixed with watching the movie and finishing a story by Brumier caused it all to roll together in my head. Currently, In The End is the song by Linkin Park. Which is ironic because it is playing right now. But if I ever go back and put in splits, I would use lines from the song. It just…fits.
Which character do you identify with the most?
For females, it would be Alice in Tea Shoppe. I write a lot of my life experiences and wishes into her. The conversations with her and David(Hatter) are ones that I could have with my Husband or my Brother. And in fact have had some of them.
For males? It would be Eric in In The End. I meant to write him different, a little harder. But he ended up being a different character and I write him easily.
Generally I identify with the males in my stories and work extra hard on the females. But then, I have been a tomboy most of my life.
Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
This one is hard. I REALLY want to write the Once Upon a Time, but that is because of the dream and how vivid it was. I am so looking forward to that one. However, I have found In The End and You’re All I’m Asking For have been my fallbacks. If nothing else I can just sink my head into them at a drop of a pin.
Concept? Has to be my Tin Man. It is so freaking complex and such a joy to write, I only have four chapters published, but have up to fifteen written. I have put it aside to work on others, since I want to finish some of them. But I am looking forward to getting back to that one and so is my Beta. She has claimed it. LMAO. The only others she had done that to is, of course, In The End (Fun fact, it is actually dedicated to her since she inspired me to start writing again) and Tea Shoppe. She begs me for chapters to Tea Shoppe.
Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
Yes! My hubby is the person who I bounce ideas off of. He supports me wholeheartedly and has in fact hinted that this year I should write a book, or turn Tea Shoppe into a story to turn in to publishers. He is my rock. My other big supporter has been my cousin Amanda. She in fact has bought the Wonderful World of Oz to keep up with me for the Tin Man story. The others in the family are aware that I write, but mostly ignore it.
Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
I have been banned from the SVM books until the last one. They want to tell me if it is worth reading past book nine. I know most of what has happened from the fanfic, but I have actually been begged not to read them.
True Blood? hmm. There are two. Episode 2X09 made me cry. For it to invoke that much feelings from me tells me I really connected with it and Godric. Obviously I didn’t want him to die and am writing a fic that deals with him being alive. The other? 3X02 Beautifully Broken. Why? Because that is one of the ones you really can tell Sookie and Eric have a chance. He actually comes to her to tell her that he lied to her. Which to me is pretty telling since it seems everyone else has no issues lying to her. Plus who can resist the line: “Oh, I’m not leavin’. You are going to invite me in, so I can protect you or have passionate, primal sex with you. How about both? So, are you going to invite me in?” – Eric
What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
hmm. I get some of the greatest from my fans. I have had pages of a compliment. It has helped out when I get depressed. But the most awesome have been when a writer that I love compliments me or follows me. I have admitted on Facebook that I have fangirl moments. However, this may sound the oddest, but the absolute best have been from people who have tried to help me with the stories. The lady who took the time to tell me about Carlisle and the fact he would have spoken Proper English, which is great to hear, but hard to portray an accent in. Or the ladies who have come forward to help me with the German for Godric. That they care that much for the story means so much to me!
How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I try to take it as help. As mentioned above. But I have had some that have commented where it hurt. Then I either turn to reviews to point out to myself that I cannot suck with that many people enjoying my stories. Or I turn to my friends and hubby. Well sometimes to my hubby, he is not great with the sympathy thing, but he is awesome when I am mad. And I have got mad. I am human.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Just start! And start in Fanfiction or somewhere that is not going to judge every word. That was my mistake. I tried to get into Twilighted before I learned that they are very, very hard to get into. So I set myself up for heartbreak. But FanFiction? Yeah, there are haters. But there are so many awesome people out there that will let you know. I am one of them, I read some very good aspiring authors. I try to help them out, and seen the visible improvement.
My golden rule? Say 2 positive things for every negative. It works. Try it.
Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
OMG. Right this second I am rereading Life Happens, So Just Roll With it by Mama4Dukes. But I am also reading any updates that are popping up. I actually also read my own stories. I plan to go back and reread Speklez’s stories. And The Arrangement by TexanLady and the other stories she writes. I jump around alot, in fact I was rereading a bunch of Inuyasha fics, especially the Sentinel Mother. I have a list of my favorites that I need to update on my WordPress site. I haven’t added the Dokuga or WordPress favs or any new ones. But it is how I am keeping up with them.
And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
Facebook, under Kittyinaz (If you find me there, don’t be surprised if I friend you, but I warn you, I share alot of pics.) But the most common place to find me? Kittyinaz.Wordpress.com. I spend alot of time there, tweaking the site. I also have links to my favorites there, my stories are mostly there along with a few that have not made it over to Fanfiction. But either place yields information of what I am doing (I linked my Facebook to WordPress and vice versa). And I have some GREAT readers who admit to stalking me on WordPress.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
