Author Spotlight: spikeyhairgood

(Yes, read that extremely fast and excitedly…)

So yeah. Anyhoo, this girl is so frickin amazing. When I first reached out to her after I spotlighted her story Day Late Friend (amazeballs!!!) she was so sweet! And she just gets sweeter the longer we go back and forth. She’s an amazing writer and her stories are absolutely amazing..couldn’t you tell with my awesome use of ‘amazeballs’???

Without further ado, here she is…

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
My pen name is spikeyhairgood. I really had a thing for spiked up hair in middle school and the username has followed me into adulthood. My real name is Marie.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m a 25-year-old living in Arizona, born and raised in New Jersey, with much time spent in New York with family and friends.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I work a 9 to 5 job, Monday to Friday, so that takes a lot of my time. When I’m not working or writing, I try to spend some downtime with reading, watching movies, TV shows and listening to vinyls while staring at the ceiling, enjoying the music.

What are some things you never leave home without?
There’s a few things which is why I usually carry a purse with me. I’d say my essentials are my wallet, planner, chapstick, glasses, a book, my phone and an inhaler in case I inhale a cloud of dust and get an asthma attack, because you never know. Although, it’ll all be useless at times because I’ll just leave the car with my wallet and phone.

What are some of your favorite books?
The Mortal Instruments & The Infernal Devices series, of course. A forever favorite is The Catcher In The Rye. Recent favorites are Eleanor & ParkAustenland and Anna and The French Kiss.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
Such a hard question! I have a library of movies & TV seasons at home and I’m just genuinely bad at making decision choices.

Friends is my number one. Gilmore Girls, of course. I can always re-watch the first couple Gossip Girl seasons. I also have love for One Tree Hill, Roswell, Sons of Anarchy, Teen Wolf S1 to S3 and That 70s Show.

On the top of my head, the ultimate favorite movies would be The Mighty Ducks: D2, Four Brothers, Serendipity, Elf, Stuck In Love and Stand By Me.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Lily Collins because she is my number one. I’d bring Harry Styles because he’s hilarious to me and if I need entertainment, he can contribute that to our deserted island so we don’t focus that we are on a deserted island in the first place. He’s also a kind soul and hopefully has experience in wilderness skills. This is a new person that I’ve been loving but Lauren Jauregui because I feel like she is doing so much to empower girls – to be themselves, love what they love, fight their inner demons and she is just a wonderful human being. I feel like we could just talk about our views of positive encouragement or sit in silence while listening to music or reading books, enjoying our soul mate connection.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
I would say London because I’ve always wanted to go but there are plans in the works for visiting next year. So, I’m gonna have to say Paris. I just read Anna and The French Kiss and I’ve read Paris Was Ours and I think it would just be beautiful to experience that city.

Do you have any pet peeves?
I can’t stand when people aren’t willing to understand other points of view. I don’t approve of being so judgmental of others, to the point that someone can act like they already know them without even having so much as a conversation. I don’t like when someone initiates conversation but doesn’t pay attention to what you’re saying in reply. Those are big type of pet peeves but the small ones have to be people who drive slow for no reason or don’t use turn signals. I’m a little person with a lot of road rage, sometimes. Most times.

What are some of your favorite foods? How ’bout comfort foods?
Steak. I’m a big fan of steak with a side of mashed potatoes. Pizza, Chinese food and pasta. Comfort food would be junk food & sweets. Chips, cookies and cupcakes.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
The Autumn collection of candles from Bath & Body are comforting to me.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I’m a big music lover. Music means very much to me. If anybody reads my stories, they know that Jace and Clary are always connected by music when I write them. I am constantly listening. What I’m listening to can literally go from Jazz to Hip Hop/Rap (from the past rather than the present) to Punk Rock to Christmas music to Indie Rock to Pop Soul to Big Band. There are some music genres I don’t choose to listen to on my own time but there’s none I can’t really stand.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I have two rescued dogs. One is a ridiculously good looking Beagle and the other is a handsome Chihuhua/Corgi mix.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla? Vanilla for ice cream but chocolate for everything else.
Silver or gold? Gold
Apple or PC? Apple
White wine or red wine? White Wine
Liquor or beer? I like myself a good mixed drink but I’ll say beer because I crave wings & beer constantly.
Coffee or tea? Coffee is my love, coffee is essential.
Sleep in or get up early? I adore sleep in days.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
I used to write for a ton of fandoms but I was gone from FF for a while because of busy life living and I lost my inspiration to write. I was encouraged to start again and now I love writing in The Mortal Instruments fandom. I think there are so many great and different ideas going on. I enjoyed when I wrote for the Mighty Ducks, Four Brothers, Life With Derek and Gilmore Girls fandoms. Many of my old stories have been left behind (which my heart feels awful about) and they are still up on my page. I’m still trying to find inspiration to finish them because they were great to write back then.

I don’t have preferences for reading. I like to be reading all types of books. I’m currently reading Silver Linings PlaybookA Farewell to Arms and Lola and The Boy Next Door all at the same time so I’m open to anything when it comes to reading. I always need a YA book in my stack though, those are the books that get me venting because I’m way too attached to the characters and what goes on.

What kind of environment do you write in?
I just need to be alone to write and music playing is essential. I usually write in my room with the Christmas lights hung on my headboard turned on. I used to write in Barnes & Noble often on solo visits.

Ever write in your PJs?

How bout naked?
Nope, can’t say that I have.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Honestly, the ideas just come randomly and if I think they can go somewhere and I can really make something of it, I’ll try it out. With my first story in TMI, I knew I just wanted to be writing so I began of thinking what I could write about and I decided that some stories from my own personal life could start a story. I also wanted to see how real life could translate into writing a piece of fiction.

Do I put real life into my stories?
Yes, I do add real life in there if it fits within the story especially if I’ve experienced something or learned a lesson. It’s fiction laced with reality.

Do you write on a schedule?
No, no schedule. I just write when I have time or when inspiration/motivation strikes.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I usually have an outline of what I know will happen for sure but if the story goes a different route that I didn’t plan, I go with it. I usually have a few chapters in mind on what to do and I just go with the flow.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Nope, I just need music and to be comfortable. If I feel like my head is going to explode and I have that absolute need to write, I know that chapter will be great. But if not, I just try to be in the mind of the characters in the story.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I’m not sure, actually. I would like to challenge myself in different genres. I’ve written humor, drama/angst, romance although sometimes it’s laced with humor and a bit of action. I don’t know think I’d like to tackle horror though, it would just haunt my mind.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
At first, I used to battle with feeling bad if I don’t update constantly. I would force myself to write but would be unsatisfied with the chapter. I’ve learned to wait it out now until the chapter comes naturally. I think another difficulty is just being able to keep true to the characters while putting them in these different situations and stories. I like to be realistic in stories so thinking of the timeline for couples or how things happens can be trying at times. But I do actually enjoy all the planning that goes into it, creating that build up for situations and getting into the minds of how characters may react. It feels like a challenge I can take on where I’m given the opportunity to improve my writing.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
There is no method at all. A lot of my stories are songs that coincide with the plot of the story. Other times it can be a phrase, a play on words or a line of words said in the story. The chapter can either just be numbered or just a title that is an explanatory of the chapter. It can even be something said in the chapter. I’m all kinds of random when it comes to titles.

Which character do you identify with the most?
I’m gonna have to say Jace. I always understood where he was coming from. I saw all his potential and understood his brokenness. And his humor, I’m all about his humor.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
Oh, this feels awful having to choose. I don’t think I can make this decision.

I love writing both of them, honestly. I enjoyed writing As Lovers Go because it was my first one to come back. That story has my heart and soul in it and that’s why I’m having trouble writing the epilogue for it. I was going through all the emotions of the characters while I wrote it and I’m too attached to them. The reason I loved to write it was because the story may have been simple but I felt like it was relatable in a way that if the characters could do it then anybody else could. It was empowering to write towards the end.

Concept wise, I definitely choose Day Late Friend. It’s so much fun to create the content of the story just because there’s a ton of possibilities in it. I feel like I’m gonna be writing that story for a while. There’s going to be a lot of chapters because I want to do a lot with it.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
My Ma knows but she doesn’t read them. My boyfriend was the one who encouraged me to write again (because he wanted to read it) so he’s all invested. A few close friends who I think of as family know about them too.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
In TMI, my favorite book was City of Fallen Angels. I was sincerely entertained. All the different plots came together at the end and there were a lot of scenes in it that were haunting in content. I had a nightmare of one of the scenes and was distraught the next day. I thought I saw a flaming pumpkin on the screen while attending a concert. I was screaming the word ‘evil’.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Whenever someone compliments my writing in general, I smile so big – eyes closed and everything. Especially if they add that it moved them to tears or just invoked any strong emotions in them, it makes me feel like I’m a writer that matters. My heart hurts for them because I know they must be feeling along with me. A sweet reviewer has also said that if I wrote a book, they would buy it. That meant the world to me.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I don’t want to jinx it but I haven’t gotten any really bad criticism yet. Keyword, yet. I’m trying to prepare my heart but I don’t think I ever could be ready for that. But suggestions and opinions, I take those into account all the time and I don’t mind reading them at all. I do think it goes only to a certain point though. I know ultimately where I’m bringing the story and characters so I usually hope that the readers trust me enough to just stick with me through the journey. Whenever I do get discouraged, I just try to push forward and not let it get in the way of my own writing.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
My favorite part is the support – being able to get support for my own stories but also giving support to other stories and authors. I think encouragement is important for anybody who is willing to put their efforts and talents into writing a story. Sometimes authors need that push and this fandom is understanding of that, I believe. I don’t have a least favorite part about it.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Just write. Even if you’re unsure, just sit there and write for hours or minutes. If you aren’t comfortable enough to post anything, keep a document for yourself but if one day, you feel like you have a great story and you’d like it to be shared, post it. And just have confidence in your writing. When you write, you understand your own writing style and you find out in what areas you want to get better. You can only discover those things and get better if you just write. Writing is for yourself first and foremost. Not for anyone else, so just write and go for it.

Have any recommendations?
I’m currently catching up with A Tale of Two by simplymoshingintomordor and I fell in love with it by the middle of the first chapter. I love stories by dayuuuumgirl. The stories I’m always patiently waiting for updates on is Breakups and Shakeups by DeathCabForMariComing Home by rippingbutterflywings (she also has a story called Jace From Dominos that I read when I’m in need of a pick me up) and Reckless Abandon by IWriteNaked. That’s only a few, I have more stories in my favorites section on my FF profile.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
I always answer PMs on fanfiction so that’s a good way to just get in contact with me. I’ve also got a twitter (it’s private but I accept the requests) and a tumblr under the username mariegarbagio. I follow back on social media so add away.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Of course! Thank you for being interested enough to read my answers and read my stories in the first place :)

So yeah, go read her stories (cause they rock) and leave her some love (cause she deserves it) and enjoy lovelies! Cya!
