Author Spotlight: Niknakz93

Hey lovelies! I have another completely ridiculously great author for you guys today. This girl wrote one of the first TMI stories I ever read….and I’ve re-read so many times since then. *blush*

She’s completely astonishingly awesome and absolutely so sweet. And the way she writes…it gets under your skin. I almost had to stop reading that first story (Ascension, go check out the spotlight) and now I’m cringing with some of her other stuff cause…ugh! God! So gritty and real and heartbreaking and heartwarming and **ahh the feels**!!!!!

So yeah, I’m fangirling just a bit cause I really am super excited about this chick and I can’t wait to read more of what she’s got. So yeah…let’s read on, shall we??

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Hellooo! I’m Nicola, more commonly known as Niknakz93. My username is derived from my favourite crisps as a child, (Niknakz) and 93 for my birth. I’ve been using that username in various places since I was about 13. Never had the heart to change it.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m 21 and British. I wrote Harry Potter fanfiction as a child, but showed it to nobody. Then one day while searching for Supernatural fanfiction (M rated, I’m so ashamed) I found the glorious (and sometimes disturbing) world of online fanfiction!

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
Most likely playing Pokemon on my 2DS. That stuff is addictive! I’m also an obsessive reader, writer and artist. I’m always doing one of the three if you see me. Or scribbling down scenes for a new chapter in my notebook. Let’s hope I don’t leave my M-rated ideas on the back seat of the bus again… I’m sorry whoever found that!

What are some things you never leave home without?
As stated above, my notebook and trusty pen with a pompom on top. A book, because you never know when you’ll have to wait for an hour for something *glares at buses* Hmm, also tissues, perfume, strawberry chapstick and my purse that never seems to want to open.

What are some of your favorite books?
*glances at personal library* oh lawdy, I could go on forever! Well, The Mortal Instruments, of course. Found those babies in 09 and reading one page of Jonathan/Sebastian in City of Glass made me buy all three on the spot. Infernal Devices by Cassie again, The Black City trilogy by Elizabeth Richards; Sarah J Maas’s Throne of Glass boos; Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy; Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy by Laini Taylor; Mara Dyer trilogy by Michelle Hodkin;Harry Potter… I could literally go on and on!

Favorite TV shows and movies?
Here comes another list! The 100, The Originals, American Horror Story, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Arrow, Marvel movies, Sleepy Hollow TV show, The Fault in our Stars, Divergent, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies, Hunger Games movies, Frozen, Supernatural… I could do this all day!

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Stephen Amell (Arrow from the TV show) for eye candy. He can also bring a boat so we can get off said deserted island.

Les Stroud the survivorman so I don’t die a painful death there.

Tom Hiddleston. I mean… why not? Him or Benedict Cumberbatch. They can be the entertainment so I don’t lose my mind!

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Totally cliché, but New York. It’s always been a dream to go to America as I have never left England.

Do you have any pet peeves?
When someone abuses a book in some shape or form. HOW COULD YOU???

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
Garlic pizza. I am addicted to garlic pizza and chocolate orange ice cream. Also milk bread, weirdly. I’m such a weird eater. I put ketchup on pretty much anything.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
The smell of my favourite perfume. It’s called Mi Amor from NEXT. I wear that and it feels like home is still around me.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I am a massive music lover. From Pierce the Veil to Taylor Swift, I love pretty much all of them. Except rap. I hate rap with a burning passion. My favourite songs change from time to time. Right now my favourite is Byegone by Volcano Choir. My all-time favourite song might be Angels on the Moon by Thriving Ivory. I also write all my scenes to music, usually score music.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I have a The Mortal Instruments tattoo on my backside. Ooops!

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Can’t I have both? *puppy dog eyes* Okay… vanilla
Silver or gold? Silver. It’s so purrrtttyyy
Apple or PC? PC. Never been an Apple girl
White wine or red wine? Red wine. But I don’t like wine much.
Liquor or beer? Liquor! Hate beer.
Coffee or tea?  I’m British. It’s totally obvious which I’m picking here.
Sleep in or get up early? *pulls covers back over my head* I’m never getting up.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
My fandoms have changed a LOT over the years, writing wise. I began with Supernatural and have now ended up with The Mortal Instruments. I don’t plan on writing a different category now. TMI is home to me.

What kind of environment do you write in?
My room! Sat on my bed with a cup of hot chocolate, headphones on and talking to the screen when a character does something. I like to tell them off quite regularly. Or tell them to hurry up and just smush lips already.

Ever write in your PJs?
In my Pikachu or deer onesie, usually!

How bout naked?
…sometimes ;)

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
I find inspiration from everything. Real life experiences, items and well, anything! I started writing Ascension because I myself was depressed and needed something to take my mind off it. It was an outlet and it worked out pretty well.

Do I put real life into my stories?
Depends on the story, but yes, sometimes.

Do you write on a schedule?
I write whenever inspiration strikes me. Sometimes it hits me full on and I can churn out that chapter. But others… well, the inspiration never comes and the story is left high and dry. Which I realllllly hate doing,  but can’t help it.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I jot the outline down in my trusty notebook, but as I’m writing some things are usually edited. I’ve never wrote an outline to word. If I had with Ascension… well, Jace was originally not going to survive the ending! But I deemed the fic too full of sadness to do such a thing. I’ve let them have a happy ending in this fic. In other fics? We shall see, mwahaha.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Not that I know of?

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I adore writing romance. It’s certainly my favourite genre. As for something I’m not great at, I’m not sure? Over the years I’ve tackled pretty much every genre just to get somewhat decent at it. Probably writing kids. I’ve always been a tad messy at writing them.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
The worry that I’ve misspelled something is a big one. Most of the time I write at something like 5am because inspiration hit me, and I post it half asleep. Also reading bad reviews, because they really knock your confidence. I’m not good with criticism, personally. I kinda clam up and don’t write anything for about a week after reading some. It’s weird and I can’t help it.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Story titles usually come from something that will happen near the end, or the last word of my story. (See Existence for that one) Or it’s based on the song that inspired the story (Chasing the Sun by Sara Bareilles is what inspired my new one, and is also named that) It really depends! Also with chapters. Chapter titles usually relate to something that will happen in the chapter.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Oh goodness! That is such a hard question. I’ll say Hermione Granger because our hair is both busy (even though mine is now vivid purple) and we are both know-it-alls. As a child growing up I always aspired to become something like Hermione.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
My favourite to write was probably Ascension. I still really miss writing it. It was my first attempt at a contemporary story. Although… it was originally going to be a story about Jace being a part demon rockstar in a world where Shadowhunters are no more. But that changed to him just being an addict when I realized that would make a much more interesting story to read and write. My other favourite is the one I’m currently writing, Chasing the Sun. It’s a concept I have never even seen online before and it’s surprisingly fun to write, even though I’m regularly inflicting agony on the characters, Jace in particular (I’m sorry baby) Writing nice versions of Jonathan and Valentine is a total blast! It’s about time I wrote Valentine as a decent father, not an insane psychopath.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
Tell my family about my writing? No chance in heaven or hell. They already think I’m extremely weird for reading so much.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
City of Heavenly Fire. That book broke me into tiny pieces and stamped on my heart right after. I adore Jonathan\Sebastian, and his death scene was my favourite part of the entire series in a sadistic way. It touched me and my tears have ruined that page.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
I’m happy to report that I have too many to list! As a fanfiction writer, you don’t get paid money, but in reviews. I feel rich with how many lovely reviews I get.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
As I said before, I just kinda curl up into hedgehog mode when faced with criticism.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
I hate how the TMI fandom is slowly but surely dying. I barely see any on Twitter now ever since the disastrous movie came out, and it’s so sad to see a flourishing fandom reduced to practically nothing. But the ones that are still here rock my fuzzy turtle socks off. I also dislike people who read my stories JUST to send hate. It’s very saddening.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
WRITE. WRITE ALLLLL THE WORDS. Write on the toilet, on the bus, write while walking into a lamppost! You can only get better with practice! Don’t be frightened to share your work with the world either! Read it aloud to your pet or your bed or whatever and feel PROUD of what you’ve wrote. Because you wrote it!

Have any recommendations?
Oh no, I could go on and on again! But weirdly, I don’t have any recent rec’s because I haven’t read any fanfiction in a long time. Must change that tonight.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
I’m a Twitter addict. You can find me 24/7 on there at @thewickedpowers. I’m also on Tumblr, but I don’t check that account often. I don’t bite, feel free to tweet me!

(BTW, You can find her on ff here.)

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

Oh and she’s given me the greatest new way to describe my spawn…they go into ‘hedgehog mode’! Seriously I said that to Spawn #2 and he looked so confused, but I showed him some hedgehog pics and he totally embraced it. :) So yeah, go leave her some love! Thanks lovelies and enjoy!!!
