Aaaaaaaaaaand it’s another spotlight from September 2013! I should probably remember not to do these when I’ve got 3 small kids running around….but yeah here ya go!
Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Robin although people here know me either as Breathesgirl or tj6james6.
So, tell me a little about yourself.
What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I work full time. I’m a mom of twin teenage boys and right now there’s some private stuff going that’s taking a lot of my time and energy.
What are some things you never leave home without?
My phone (can’t check my email without it when not at home), my driver’s license and bus pass.
What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
Laura Ingalls Wilder, Ann of Green Gables, Spider Robinson, Dresden Files, it’s a long list.
Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
I don’t watch much TV but when I did I enjoyed Hell’s Kitchen, Top Chef, Iron Chef and home improvement shows.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Sean Connery! The accent and the man can act! Ryan Reynolds. The sense of humour, definitely the sense of humour. Halley Berry, one word: catsuit! I’ll add another—Queen Latifah. The woman can make a gunny sack look sexy!
What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Winter would be Australia. Summer would be Sweden.
Do you have any pet peeves?
Yep. People who walk all over me verbally when we’re trying to have a conversation. People who talk through movies. Short list.
Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I’ve drawn a blank on this one
Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate. Nothing better in an ice cream float than chocolate ice cream and coca-cola.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in? What’s that? Sleeping in means up at 6:30 am instead of 4:30.
Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?
I started a little over a year ago. I found I enjoyed reading them so I decided to see if I could do as good a job as some of the ones I had been reading.
Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
Hmmmm, I have thought about it but haven’t come to a conclusion yet.
What kind of environment do you write in?
I write in the living room, on the bus, at work, waiting in line at the store…pretty much wherever inspiration strikes.
Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I use all of the above. My phone is totally awesome for this since I can use my Google docs on it.
Ever write in your PJs?
Right now and any other time I can.
How bout naked? :o)
For sure, every chance I get.
Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Some of my inspiration comes from other’s writing and some is just from Charlainne Harris &/or Alan Ball.
Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
Nope, if I have time I write, if I don’t my mind is usually preoccupied with it.
Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
There is no rhyme or reason to how I write. I get the inspiration for a story (Disclosure for instance) and it just flows after that.
How do you deal with potential writers block?
I read other’s stories, browse the web, get up and move around, work on a different story since I never have just one story on the go…
Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I’m working my way up to writing a slash and I have a heck of a time consistently writing more than two or three characters into a story at any given time.
What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Writing more than the main two or three characters—I have a really hard time writing auxiliary characters.
Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
When inspiration hits that’s when it gets a title usually. Once in a while I write based on the title but not often.
Which character do you identify with the most?
Pam . You can’t get much more snarky without BEING her!
Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
The Choice was my favorite. It wasn’t my first Sookie turns story but it was my first where Eric wasn’t her Maker.
Concept wise I think it’s my Baby Vamp Sookie stories. I like the fact they get to be just Joe Blows rather than political figures with no extras like fae abilities or anything.
Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
I just talk to my boyfriend about it. He encourages me to write.
Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
I LOVED Dead To the World. Eric was finally stripped down to the bare minimum, no politics or anything other than his pre-political personality. I don’t have a particular favorite episode, season four was my favorite.
What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Being asked to do this interview with you! Before this it was when someone would say they liked my story or give me some constructive criticism.
How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I try to use it to become a better writer. If they’re an unnamed guest I’ll mention it in the next post, if it’s a regular reader/reviewer I’ll PM with them to try to find out where they are having the problem and why so I can hopefully avoid that pitfall again in other stories.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Write about what you love. For me, right now, it’s Sookie Stackhouse, if you can put life experience in there wonderful! If you love history, add it as accurately as possible, same with science or anything else.
Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
Fanfic is EricIzMine’s Infinite series and her Multi-verse stories. Books, right now it’s Tolkien again.
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thank you for asking me! It has been an honour and it’s been fun, too!
She is so awesome…and I’ve had the privilege of getting to know her a bit on Facebook…she helped me with my story (that I still haven’t been able to work on!!!) So yeah, go give her a shout! She doesn’t bite and she’s awesome!!!
