Author Spotlight: vegetasbubble

And here’s another Sept 2013 spotlight for your viewing pleasure. I’ll just dive right in, shall I?

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
I’m Ashlee, or vegetasbubble as I’m most commonly known online.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m 24 and live in Australia. I am married to a wonderful man and have been for eight months now. Though we haven’t got any children yet, I intend to have a big family because I am from a big family. I also have two cats and two dogs and love taking them for walks on weekends or down to the beach for swims.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
Well, I work full time in childcare and have for almost six years no. I love it and I love spending time with the children and watching them grow and watch their siblings come along.I love shopping – shoes and handbags are my obsession. My husband hates it when I find a new style I like because he cannot control me around them  I also love going to the beach, spending time with friends having coffee and such and I also love just kicking back and reading books in my very comfy hammock.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My phone, obviously, because its my day planner as well. I also never leave home without at least one book in my handbag because if I get bored where I might be, I may start reading. I also tend to carry headphones, my iPad, deodorant and body spray cause its hot all the time and sometimes my Macbook just because I may be going somewhere where I need to take notes or send a larger email that my phone can’t.

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
I have and always will love the Harry Potter novels by JK Rowling, its my favourite fandom after SVM/TB. I am also a fan of Meg Cabot and John Green.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
There are so many. At the moment they would be Shameless, Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Big Bang Theory and Law and Order: SVU.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Alan Alda, Charlie Chaplin and Chris Rock – I like people who make me laugh. Alan Alda as Hawkeye has always made me laugh and even now, I can still watch the series and appreciate his acting and comedy portrayals.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
London. Because then you can go anywhere in Europe  I would love to visit London to see and meet people of a different culture and one that has such an interesting and romantic history (King Henry VIII anyone?)

Do you have any pet peeves?
I cannot stand lazy people. I work with a bunch of females and in some instances some people are very VERY lazy and it really gets on my nerve when people don’t clean their own dishes, replace the toilet paper, mop or clean… I just don’t like people that expect others to do their jobs for them.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I have never broken a bone

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla? Depends on what we’re talking about. If its ice-cream then Vanilla but if its cake, then it has to be chocolate. I’m being difficult aren’t I?
Silver or gold? Gold. I can’t wear any type of silver – I’m allergic to it.
Apple or PC? Apple. I grew up with PC and have recently (in the last three years) come to own an iMac, a Macbook, and iPad and an iPhone. I’m an Apple freak true and true.
White wine or red wine? I don’t drink an alcohol at all. But red wine is nice to cook with.
Liquor or beer? Neither, because I don’t drink.
Coffee or tea? Coffee. Tea isn’t strong enough and I probably have about six cups of coffee a day.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in. I love sleeping in on the weekends, especially when my husband isn’t working. I should enjoy my sleep ins now before I have children.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?
I started writing fanfiction in about 2004, when I was 16 and still in high-school. I’ve had my fanfiction.net account since then and have since posted and taken down many fanfics that I was happy with or that I didn’t like. I mainly started after getting into the Harry Potter fandom and falling in love with the pairing of Draco x Hermione (Dramione) so I found some stories and read them and then decided to start writing.

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
I write for heaps of fandoms but my main other fandoms I write for are Harry Potter and Sailor Moon. I write heaps of different characters/pairings for Harry Potter but mainly Dramione where as with Sailor Moon I am an avid Minako/Kunzite fan and only write them.

What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I write down ideas for chapter names or story names but I mainly write my fanfiction on my laptop and then upload them straight to the Internet.

Ever write in your PJs?
Constantly. If I get an idea in the middle of the night or early in the morning I’m up and on the computer typing away at a million miles an hour.

How bout naked? :o)
No. I tend to write during the middle of the day and I live in a busy street with open windows to my office… so no.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
I find inspiration from a lot of different things – tv series, movies or books. I also may write a story based on the characters and things we know about them (For example I am writing a story at the moment about Eric being a Vampire Viking set in the time after he was turned where Sookie is a full fairy.)

Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
I tend to like to update my stories when I feel inspired. If I have inspiration for one certain story I tend to update that one more than the others but I try and update as often as I can.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I write how it comes to me. I tend to chop and change my mind constantly throughout chapter writing.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
Walk away from the computer and come back at a later stage.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Not really, no. I do tend to have a coffee while I am writing though.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another?
Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing? I can write depending on what my inspiration and or prompt is. If find it easier writing a story involving more than one character and genre though.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Completing them and ending them without upsetting readers. Oh and I hate flame reviews, especially people to cowardly to sign-in to send a review.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
I tend to just keep my chapters simple (Chapter #) but titles are usually the hard thing. Sometimes I name my stories after quotes from songs or movies.

Which character do you identify with the most?
I don’t know if I actually relate myself to a character but one I find that I enjoy writing and have a better understanding of is Sookie because of her strong characteristics and her ability to fall in love easily. Sounds like me, yeah.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
I have a few I am having fun writing at the moment. There’s tattoo artist Eric (Ink Me Baby), there’s Vampire Viking Eric (The Sun The Sky The Dawn) and a few I have written and waiting on my laptop for future posting. I like writing all human Eric and Sookie because you can put them in a new kind of situation and they still have their sass.

Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
No one in real life really knows about my writing. I have a few friends on Facebook who I found through livejournal (kerri240879 and pinkwands) who are fellow Australians. I don’t really want my real life friends and family to read my writing because its more for fun and entertainment for myself and fellow fans. Plus, most of my friends/family don’t like reading or the fandoms I do.

Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
I’m not a big fan of the books but have read them all but my all time favourite True Blood episode would have to be Season 3 Episode 10 where Eric and Sookie finally kiss for the first time which pretty much sealed the deal for Sookie and Eric finally realises what his feelings for the pretty blonde fairy are.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
I receive a lot of positive feedback but lately, I have felt even more good about my reading. On ff.net I have a story called Together We Will Survive (a Sookie rape-survivor story) which received a really negative review and I chose to pause the story and even considered taking it down. After posting an authors note chapter explaining what had happened, I received about twenty reviews and PMs from various authors and readers telling me to keep with the story, to not take it down and to ignore the message. The fact that the email was so horrible made keeping the story up even harder to consider but after receiving the messages of support I decided to keep the story up and am in the process of rewriting the story from the very beginning.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
Not very well. Unless its actually helpful I tend to get really upset and go and have a little cry.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Write what you want, don’t listen to flames or people to cowardly to log in to leave you feedback. Write for yourself, not for others and post only what you are happy with and want, not what other people want.

Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
At the moment I am on an All Human Eric and Sookie buzz and have about six windows open of various all-human stories to go through. They’re my kinda obsession at the moment.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
