Author Interview: Carroll E. Stewart

September 2013 was a huge month for spotlights….that never got published. Ugh. But we’re trucking though them and we’re almost at the end. :) This lovely lady is awesome and she’s actually published her own original fiction. You can follow the links on her wordpress, which is linked below. :) Have at it lovelies!

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Carroll E. Stewart

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I work part time.  I cook all the time. Baking is a favorite all though I also grill.   I like to travel. I photo journal cemeteries.   I write when I can get some time in.

What are some things you never leave home without?
I always have on perfume.  Either Angel or Womanity by Theirry Mulger.

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
Dracula, Stoker; The Egyptian, Waltari;  Cleopatra A Birgraphy, Roller; Roots of Home, Versaci; and The Queen Anne House, Foster.  Any cookbook, just trot it on out there.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
I watch very little TV.  NCIS, Elementary, and Sherlock Holmes when it pops up on BBC.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Wow….I have questions about that.  How long am I there?  If it is for the long haul, he may not be famous but my husband.  And not just because he is a stud…lolololol…you need shelter, food, and smarts to survive.  He is the total package.  Airborne Ranger!  Hoooo-aaaah!

If I’m just there for the afternoon, no offense to the famous, (or my friends and family)  but I’d take my lap top. Enjoy the view, the quiet, and write.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
I have not seen the fjords of Norway.  That is on my list.

Do you have any pet peeves?
Drive your f***ing car and put the f***ing phone, down!  Nor do I wish to hear your conversation and I think I can speak for the rest of the  restaurant, while I am at dinner.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I am a shoe whore.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Vanilla…more versatile
Silver or gold?  Actually platinum…
Apple or PC?  Apple
White wine or red wine?  Tequila…because you can not say Ole after you do a shooter of wine.
Liquor or beer?  Scotch, because it taste better than beer.
Coffee or tea?  Both
Sleep in or get up early? Early

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?
I started writing fan fics after I read Dracula back in the late 60’s.  That was my first one.  Only toyed with it afterwards because I was raised to believe that was plagiarism…. still do…

After I read Book Ten in the SVM series I stopped reading that series and decided to write my own HEA for Eric and Sookie.

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
No.

What kind of environment do you write in?
If I am at home, during the winter, in front of the fireplace.  During the summer, my little library.  If traveling…just where ever it is quiet.

Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I write on my laptop….put down ideas so I don’t forget them with pen and paper.  Will also jot down notes on my iPhone.

Ever write in your PJs?
Yes…am doing so now.

How bout naked? :o)
LOLOLOLOL….I guess I have been in bed with only a bed  jacket on…does that count as naked?

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
My life.

Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Absolutely.

Do you write on a schedule?
I write whenever I have the time.  I write every night starting at eight.

If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
I just turn everything off and sit down and write.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
There is no planning…I just write.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
I have not had that yet.  I dance first thing every morning for an hour. (I get up at five.)  I work through ideas at that time.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
No

Is one genre easier for you to write than another?
No.

Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
Depends on what you define as great.  All of it comes easily to me…I don’t think that makes it great. lolololololol

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Not having enough time to sit down and write it from the beginning to end without being interrupted.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Yes.  I pick one line out of the story and that becomes the title and I know what that line is going to be before I start the story.

Which character do you identify with the most?
I like Dr. Watson.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why?
Actually I have two…..Victory Runs Deep…you get the first part of Eric’s back story which helps you to understand who he is.

And then Tall Tellings and Truths.  You get Eric’s life from King Eric’s point of view.  King Eric has been with him the longest.  He knows stuff…

Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
I like them all.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
No

How do they feel about it?
Writing makes me happy…therefore…please write.

Which is your favorite SVM book?
Hmmmm….I don’t think I have a favorite.  I like them all.

Favorite True Blood episode?
Season Two….when Eric tricks Sookie into sucking the bullets out of him  and having his blood.  His smirking…not to be missed.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
That would be for IANAA….a reader said it was the best example of fan fiction she had read due to the fact that it did not rehash all the old plot lines.  That was my goal…not to rehash…but to explain the missing pieces from Miss Harris’ books and then write mythos for vampires and my own story line.  I live for the backstory.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I turn sixty this year and have been around the world  a couple of times, literally.  I have had a miscarriage, raised our daughter, house broke two dogs and buried my twin with my husband’s twenty seven year Army career tossed in there. I don’t mean to sound arrogant but…you can take your criticism and go someplace else and read.  It’s fan fiction, it’s free…or better yet, all of you with a better idea, write your own.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Write what you know.  I only write what I like…what I want to read.  That would be the place to start.

Have any recommendations?
I just finished a biography about Jimmy Stewart.

What are you reading at the moment?
Just writing and editing my own stuff…lolololol…..

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?LOLOLOLOL…..Carrollestewart.wordpress.com

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

  1. I love Carroll Stewart :-) When I saw her on FF.net I did not read her at first because I did not like to read anything at that time without it being E/S but I did start reading her story (out of sequence ) “I am not an Architect ” and I was hooked I have read all of her stories more than once. She is funny and tells a great story especially the back story. You can get her at word press but she is also on FictionPad. If you have not read her stories please do all I can say is take a shot of the gators best (Patron) and settle in for laughs and heartache and wonderful characters that add to The SVM and TB world. She has helped me see this world is better via writers like her and you and others is so much richer with these stories.
