Indestructible Despair

Taken verbatim from my final English project
This poem started because my husband insisted on listening to a Disturbed album while on our way to pick up our son from daycare. Disturbed’s lyrics are so hard, yet they have such a message that I couldn’t help but be caught up in them. It doesn’t seem to matter how long it’s been since I’ve listened to the album, but I always seem to identify with the darkness surrounding their songs. The fact that the band members write the songs, as opposed to the old boy band way of doing things, make the songs that much more meaningful. I can’t help it that I get caught up in the darkness and pain of the music. The music fills my head with images and visions, and that is how this poem came to be on paper.

Indestructible Despair

Night’s inky blackness burns
downward from the heavens,
blanketing the earth in destruction.
Resurrecting the times of war
and famine, the darkness scorches
away any hint of humanity.
Beings scurry around and away
from any gleam of light,
instinctively knowing that
devastation lies ahead.
The gloom blankets and smothers,
creating for itself a new identity.
The breath of life is slowly
choked out of the world,
as the aggressive shadows
pillage the depths of earth
and sky and sea.
The boiling waves crash, and
the bright comets scream
toward the ground.
This new age dawns,
bright and dark and dangerous,
eclipsing the world before..
The velvety depths of evil dark
envelope the world and plunge
everything into indestructible
despair.

And the world welcomes the darkness.
