Author Spotlight: Livybug

Hey lovelies! So I have a new author for you to check out. Yippee!!!

Anyways, this chick has written a few (read:4) Mortal Instruments fics. I actually found her by accident. I had a TMI fic pulled up on my phone and my finger managed to press…something-which somehow navigated me to her. Seriously, I struggled for a few minutes randomly pressing things even though my fingers were nowhere near any links. Apparently my phone knows what I like.

So yeah, I’m gonna leave you to see what she’s got to say cause she’s pretty frickin’ sweet!

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
So, tell me a little about yourself.
I am a mother of 3. I have a slight (huge) addiction to the written word whether it be reading or writing, it doesn’t seem to matter to me. However, my passion before that was music. I love to sing as well.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, first and foremost I am Mom. I also work part time for the State I live in with individuals that have mental disabilities. After those two priorities comes reading and writing…and sleeping. I love to sleep!

What are some things you never leave home without?
Keys, phone, Kindle.

What are some of your favorite books?
That is a dangerous question. I have a few…

The Lux series, Jennifer L. Armentrout
The Arcana Chronicles, Kresley Cole.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, Laini Taylor
Shadow Hunter Chronicles, Cassandra Clare

There are so many more but these are the top…in no specific order.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
Vikings on the History Channel is my addiction right now, but I also watch, The Originals, Grey’s Anatomoy, and Empire. Movies are tough, too. Like books there are so many good ones, but Dirty Dancing is my all-time favorite.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Laini Taylor, because they way she spins words amazes me.

MacGyver, because he would know what to do with a hair tie, bobby pin and a leaf.

Chuck Norris, because…really he can do everything.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
I have two; Venice and New Orleans.

Do you have any pet peeves?
Yup, when people cut their toe nails anywhere BUT the bathroom. That’s just gross.

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
All time favorite is my Grandpa’s meatballs, yum. But I also love tacos. Comfort food is my Mom’s tator-tot hotdish.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
Vanilla and lilac.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I can really enjoy all kinds of music. I don’t discriminate when it comes to music, although I’m not a HUGE fan of classical or heavy metal-I’m going to scream in the mic- music.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I used to sing in a band.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Chocolate, because plain vanilla is boring.
Silver or gold? Silver
Apple or PC? PC, Apple is overrated.
White wine or red wine? Red, I like sweet wine.
Liquor or beer? Liquor, Beer is nasty! Ew!
Coffee or tea?  Coffee…with LOTS and LOTS of creamer…French vanilla from Wal-mart.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
I’ve only written Fanfics using characters from the Mortal Instruments, but I could see myself using the Lux series as well. Characters have to talk, if they don’t, there’s no story to tell.

What kind of environment do you write in?
In my living room with screaming kids, crazy cats and my Chihuahua.

Ever write in your PJs?
99% of the time

How bout naked?
Nope, I live in the state of Snow and mosquitos, clothes are good.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Inspiration is all over the place, if you’re paying attention. It could be something as small as a smile from my kids or a grand gesture from my husband or just staring out my window. And yes, I do pull real life experiences into my stories. It ties me to them, makes them part of me and if I’m invested, my readers will be, too.

Do you write on a schedule?
HA HA!…NO

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I am horrible at plotting. I just can’t do it. I have a general idea, but I always know the ending so as long as everything leads to that, I’m good with it.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Writing on Sundays makes the hair on my legs grow faster…no JK, I don’t. LOL

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I tend to be good at fluff and HEA’s. I’d have a hard time with Sci-Fi I think. Love to read them and watch shows in that genre, but I just don’t think I could come up with some of that crazy stuff.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Staying true to the character that the author has created while making them your own.  In Fanfics your using another person’s creation. The reader has to be able to see that character in what they are reading as well as sense the difference. It’s tough.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Not really, whatever conveys the story the best. Don’t cry was called that because Jace told Clary, “Don’t cry,” repeatedly throughout the story. Last Words was named that because the whole story was based on the last words of a dying woman. My other two stories were named after songs.

Which character do you identify with the most?
From my fics, probably Izzy. She is all tough on the outside, but mushy on the inside. That’s me.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
Don’t Cry was my favorite concept wise. Using memories to tell the backstory for my characters was fun. My favorite to write was probably Wide Awake. I got to delve into 9/11 and really put myself into a situation that was not only emotional for the US, but also for the world. It was a challenge, as was Don’t Cry being that Jace was a tortured soldier thought to have died, but 9/11 really touched the whole world in a way and I wanted to write about it. For those who weren’t here to live it and for those that were to remember it.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
LOL! Nope.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
The Lux series, was OPAL. The Mortal Instruments was the Clockwork books. There are so many, it’s hard to remember them all off the top of my head.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
It was for Wide Awake when multiple readers told me that I’d captured the feelings they felt when 9/11 happened perfectly. It was a good feeling to know I’d accomplished what I set out to do when I wrote the story.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
Grain of salt. Harsh words do hurt, but not everyone will like my stories and they don’t have to. Don’t like them? Don’t read them!

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
Remembering names to lesser characters when I need to fill a spot! LOL! There are SO many characters in the Mortal Instruments series, It’s hard to keep track of them all.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
If you want to do it, sit down and do it. Don’t just think about it. Books don’t write themselves and they take time and devotion. They are like a child that you have to nurture and love and then send it out in the world and see if others will love it, too. It’s not easy. It’s very frustrating and when that first bad review comes in, it will rip your heart out. But for every one of those, there are 10 good ones that make you smile and make you want to write more.

Have any recommendations?
If you’re into reading fics…DDPJCLAF if an AMAZING writer. She is also on Fanfiction.

Author Spotlight: Sophie733

So, I was scrolling through random TMI searches one day on ff.net and I stumbled across this gem of an author. I read her fic Be My Escape and fell in love with how she wrote the characters. Seriously, she is pretty damn awesome. So, of course, I had to spotlight her for you lovelies.

She’s also got a Harry Potter fic published, which I haven’t read but I may be tempted by the summary. So yeah, let’s hear from her. :)

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Sophie733

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I have love writing since I was a kid and always wanted to be an author, that’s the one dream that never changed.  I’m married to Vladric733 and if it’s a fandom he reads, he’ll sometimes beta for me.  He’s the one who got me reading fan fics so I took his ‘last name’ when making my ID.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
Thinking about writing mostly.  I have a full time job as well as two dogs and two bunnies.  I mainly spend time with them when I’m not writing or at work.  I also do a lot of reading.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My cell phone, that’s about it.  If I’m driving I have my purse with my wallet and a notebook.  But for the most part I can read and make notes on my phone so it’s easiest.

What are some of your favorite books?
Harry Potter, Mortal Instruments, Chronicles of Narnia and a lot more

Anna of Byzantium will always have a place in my heart because it was the book that got me hooked on reading again.  I was a slow reader and as such it took a lot of dedication to a book to keep with it.  That historical fiction hooked me and I just kept reading after that.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
Doctor Who (though I only just got into it and am still in the early seasons on Netflix), NCIS, The Blacklist, Arrow, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (though I haven’t finished that yet either)

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Famous people?  Hmm, I don’t really know that many real names.  Can I trade two of them to have my husband?  He’s really handy and could make sure we all survive, plus he could cook anything.  Then maybe Patrick Stewart?  (Sorry, is that too mushy?  He really is the best in a tight situation.)

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Italy

Do you have any pet peeves?
Sure…Being mean to people, not being able to own up to your mistakes, driving like an idiot

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
Sushi, most italian food, steak and anything that’s made from potatoes.  Comfort foods, well if I’m not feeling well I revert back to peanut butter and jelly on toasted bread.  My mom would always make that when I was a kid.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
I have no idea…I don’t really pay attention

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I like pretty much everything, pop to country to rap to classical.  There isn’t really any kind of music I can’t stand, though there are certain songs I don’t care for.  I’m not the biggest person into screaming music, maybe because I like to know the words and I like melodies.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
While I’ve always loved visiting the beach, I am scared of the ocean and won’t go out deeper than waist high.  I like to think I just have a healthy reverence for it’s massive power.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Vanilla (goes with anything)
Silver or gold? Silver
Apple or PC? PC
White wine or red wine? I don’t care for wine
Liquor or beer? Liquor, but I don’t drink anymore
Coffee or tea?  Coffee I guess, but I don’t drink that either, but I love the smell
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in, but I usually end up getting early regardless of preference

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
Harry Potter is a big one and I’ve gotten into Mortal Instruments in the last year.  I write in the fandoms I read.

What kind of environment do you write in?
Sometimes music, but usually just quiet…me and my laptop anywhere

Ever write in your PJs?
yep

How bout naked?
Isn’t that the same as PJ’s? JK yea

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Inspiration comes from everywhere.  Sometimes I’m reading a story and a thought comes in about the same fandom but a completely unrelated plot.  Or I’m staring off while I’m listening to music and my mind wanders into the field of ‘what if’s.’  I put in some life experiences sometimes, nothing is really sticking out in my mind right now, but it’s really about them, the characters.  I feel like they write the story, not me.

Do you write on a schedule?
Not really.  I try to write something everyday, but that doesn’t always happen.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
So I get a general idea, sometimes nothing more than a scenario or a scene.  I write a chapter or two to really get into the characters and then I sit down and write plot points I want to hit.  It helps me to know where I’m going, but even then, I let changes come as I write.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
None.  I’m the girl who opens umbrellas inside just say I don’t care about bad luck and I have broken at least two mirrors–though not on purpose.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
Fiction, I only really write fiction.  I dabble with writing non fiction about my own life, but I never share those.  They are more therapeutic than actually for others.  I like writing fantasy fiction, but any fiction works for me.  Non Fiction is just not as much fun for me.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Worrying that it will never reach readers or disappointing readers.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
I try to think of a phrase that sums of the content.  Sometimes it’s something I hear or from a song (Ex: Be My Escape is the name of a Relient K song).  I also try for a bit of humor in them or a way in which the title of a chapter has a different meaning once the chapter is completed.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Usually the protagonist.  I write from a woman’s perspective because I find it hard knowing how a man thinks and I think it wouldn’t turn out right.  However, usually there is a piece of each of the main characters that I identify with in one way or another.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
I don’t know.  I am only writing my second fan fic.  In some ways I’m having more fun with this one, but that’s because it’s the idea that I’m thinking about all the time, while the other has already ended.  I tend not to stick with a concept that I don’t thoroughly enjoy.  And what I enjoy writing can change based on my mood.  Though I kind of have a rule not to take short cuts in my writing and that the characters don’t make stupid decisions just to move the plot along.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
Yes I do.  I talk to my husband thoroughly and bounce ideas off of him.  Once, on a road trip to visit family, we spend hours going back and forth about a story and in the end it was way better.  I also talk to my parents and siblings about it because I just get so excited I can’t not talk about it.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (though I am still reading this series)

Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Someone was really excited that I actually had proper grammar.  Their excitement was so evident, I had to smile when I read it.  They went on to say that it just made the story that much more awesome.  Really, when you can tell that the person genuinely loves the story, it’s the best thing in the world.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
If it’s constructive, then thank you.  That is just people trying to help and I do my best to improve.  If it’s mean, I try to ignore it.  I just itch to say something back, but I know that won’t help so I do my best to resist.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
Favorite: there are so many awesome stories out there, I just want to read all the time.  Least favorite: when stories never get finished (though I understand) and when people take short cuts in writing an otherwise amazing story

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Do not give up, ever.  There was a time I walked away from writing because I felt I would never become a good writer.  It was like tearing a piece of my soul off and putting it in a box.  I couldn’t stay away, even if I was doomed to always be bad.  For me, success wasn’t the number of people who liked it or if I ever got published.  Success was finishing a story and loving writing it.  The other thing is read!  Be an avid reader of classic, of fan fic, of everything.  Great writers are always first great readers.

Have any recommendations?
Harry Potter: Harry Crow by robst; Static by galfoy; Blood Red by Fluticorns

Mortal Instruments: Crossed Swords by Daedalic; Snowed In by SephCurrentDaughterofPoseidon

Twilight: The Consequences by M. Michelon (as well as the rest of the Twilight they write)

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

Yeah. She’s awesome. Y’all should go check her out and read her stuff and leave her reviews and all that lovely stuff. :)

Author Spotlight: SueBee0619

Hey y’all! So I have a pretty awesome author for you to check out. Now, this girl is a slight anomaly for me. She mostly writes for Twilight. *gasp*

Buuuuuutttttt….she wrote a pretty fuckawesome one shot for OUAT which is how I found her through a Captain Swan facebook page. She’s pretty frickin’ cool and you should definitely check her out. I skimmed a few of her Twilight fics and even though I absolutely could not get into the story, her writing is just as awesome as her OUAT fic. *shrug* so, if you’re into that, DEFINITELY check her out.

And now, we hear from her. :)

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Hiya! I’m Sue. SueBee is a nickname I’ve had since high school, so SueBee0619 was an easy screenname since my birthday is June 19. And Jo, who I beta for, started calling me The Betafairy, so there’s that too.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m 41 and don’t feel it (or act it). I work in New York City in entertainment and live in Jersey with my dog, Izzy.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I worked in theatre up until about a year ago (no, not as an actor), so I go see shows when I can. I play with my dog and read a lot. And occasionally am involved in a poker game with friends that started as a weekly thing about ten years ago. It’s spaced out way more now that we’re not all at the same theatre.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My iPhone, my Metrocard, and my headphones so I can drown out people during my commute.

What are some of your favorite books?
Ah… so many. A Prayer for Owen Meaney will always be way up there. I’ve recently gotten into The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, which I love, and liked The Hollows series by Kim Harrison a lot too. For YA, I really loved the Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman was pretty special too, but I just adore him as a person. If you haven’t seen it, look up his graduation speech for the University of the Arts from a few years ago. It’s wonderful for anyone with a creative bone in his or her body.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
I’m really not a huge TV person, but obviously I watch (and obsess over) OUAT. I loved Transparent (on Amazon). I binge watched FNL last year and adore the relationship between Coach and Tami Taylor. I want to see several of the Best Picture nominees from this year and just haven’t gotten to for a variety of reasons. I absolutely love 80’s John Hughes style movies and will laugh every time at Christopher Guest’s films.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Hmmmm… David Cronenberg or Neil Gaiman simply to have someone fascinating to talk to. Sam Heughan or Colin O’Donaghue because have you seen those two????? Sam might win that slot though because his muscles would come in handy. And then someone who is useful in the wild and is willing to kill bugs for me.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
I’d love to go on safari in Africa.

Do you have any pet peeves?
I’m super noise sensitive, so gum cracking/popping is top of the list. In general, basic rudeness and not being considerate of other people.

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
I love food so it’s hard to narrow it down. My family (including me) fights over my cousin’s blue grape pie at Thanksgiving. A really good, traditional cassoulet or coq au vin is a beautiful thing as is anything involving bacon. For comfort food, when I’m sick it’s avgolomeno (Greek lemon chicken soup), otherwise it’s mac and cheese or French fries. And bacon.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
Backstage in a theatre. A friend once said my face lights up when I enter an empty stage and it’s true. I just love it and feel completely at ease there.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I’m really into Hozier right now. I’m not really into pop and I can’t handle most metal (the noise thing). I’d say I don’t like country, but I love Dolly Parton, so I can’t make that blanket statement.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I have absolutely no poker face, so it’s good that some people I interact with are online only. LOL

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Vanilla
Silver or gold? Silver
Apple or PC? Apple
White wine or red wine? Depends on the season
Liquor or beer? Depends on my mood. I like a good whiskey on the rocks though.
Coffee or tea?  Coffee in the morning but I love tea as well
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in. I’ve been a night owl since I was a baby.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
I read Twilight, OUAT, and Veronica Mars. I write Twi and OUAT.

What kind of environment do you write in?
Sitting on my bed with Izzy curled up next to me (or on me). Occasionally at work if I can sneak it in.

Ever write in your PJs?
Absolutely. Actually, I’d say most of the time.

How bout naked?
I don’t think so? I think there was probably at least underwear on. LOL

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Inspiration can come from a prompt, an article I’ve read, music, a photo, a late night conversation… pretty much anything. I’ll feel the spark of an idea and then I end up teasing it out to see if there’s something to work with. I absolutely pull my real life experiences into some of the things I write, whether it’s theatre, my neighborhood, random embarrassing moments I’ve had, or even just emotions I need to get out.

Do you write on a schedule?
I’m pretty new to this writing thing, so no. I write when I’m inspired. I get an idea and then I mull and mull and mull until I have a pretty solid thought of where I want to go. And then I write in one big burst.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
Both? I plot it out in my head, but then sometimes I get inspiration while I’m writing and it goes in a completely different (and better) direction.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
No. I’m plenty superstitious in other parts of my life though.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
Fluff and humor are usually easiest for me. I’ve gotten better at digging deep to write some hurt or angst, but it can be painful and I don’t think I’m necessarily good at it. I can’t imagine writing sci-fi or fantasy simply because of the whole world you have to create around the story.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Actually doing it. I never thought I could do any kind of creative writing until I entered a fic contest a couple of years ago and I’m proud that I did. Because I’m new-ish, I have to feel it to write it, so I’ll have ideas in my head that never get to paper simply because I’m not feeling the writing bug. I probably should get more disciplined about just sitting down and writing no matter what.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
A lot of the time the title will just be there – I’ll know it immediately. There have been times though when I’ve completely struggled with what to call something and that’s when my friends get panicked PMs.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Emma Swan. But Hook is a blast to write.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
My favorite to write was probably Captain Guyliner simply because it made me laugh while I was picturing it in my head. My favorite concept wise was probably The Heart of the Matter or On a Cold Winter’s Night. I’m pretty proud of most of my stuff (and not in an egotistical way) simply because each one represents me growing as a writer or was a new way to challenge myself no matter if the actual piece is good or not. I wrote for an angst contest because I thought I couldn’t write angst. I wrote for another contest simply to see if I could force myself to write when I wasn’t feeling the writing bug. And so on and so on…

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
My sister and brother in law know that I write (I think) but the only family member who has read anything is my cousin. She’s into OUAT, so I sent her The Heart of the Matter to read because it has no smut.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
For Twilight I barely remember the books because I’ve read so much fic. A lot of fic from that fandom is so much better than the source material too. For OUAT, I really adore the Captain Swan movie (last two episodes of season 3), but the second half of season 4 seems to be shaping up nicely!

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
For my Twific “What I Did for Love,” being told that I got the feel right by people who saw A Chorus Line and were involved in the AIDS crisis that wreaked havoc on Broadway. That meant the world to me. For “The Heart of the Matter” that Eddie and Adam should hire me. I’m honestly embarrassed to admit that one.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I’ve been lucky. People have been very kind to me. I crave criticism from my pre-readers though. Rip that puppy apart so I can make it the best I can. It’s the only way to really learn.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
Drama. Infighting. People being assholes. This whole treating the actors like shit that has been happening lately has really bothered me as well.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Just go for it. And get yourself people to preread or beta who will give you honest feedback. Not just an “OMG, this is so good” (although you need a cheerleader too), but people who will give you constructive criticism. It’s the only way you learn and grow.

Have any recommendations?
Oh jeez. So many. WTVOC is always good. Spanglemaker9 has written for a bunch of different fandoms and she’s great. FictionFreak95 and Belladonnacullen among so many others in the Twi-fic world. There are so many more. I try to be good about keeping my favorites up to date, so please feel free to dig through my lists on FFN and AO3! And, if you’re looking for something in particular, I’m more than happy to point people in the right direction, so PM me.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
On FFN, AO3, Fictionpad, Tumblr, and twitter I’m SueBee0619.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

So there you have it. She’s awesome. I love both her one shots (I forgot about one…which is a horrible oversight because DUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!) and she’s definitely worth indulging in. :) So go leave her some love!

Author Spotlight: Kodabear18

Hey lovelies! Another brand spanking new author spotlight for ya today! *I’m in a weird mood, ignore me* Except, don’t ignore me cause you really need to hear about this chick.

She’s so frickin awesome. I absolutely LOVE her story The Fallen and drop everything whenever I see an update. Seriously. It ridiculous. I nearly overheated in the sauna the other day when I couldn’t stop reading. :/ That.good. So yeah, I still have yet to read her other two stories because I have had endless amounts of crap to do, but they are on my list and I absolutely cannot wait! Just like I’ll bet you can’t wait for me to shut up.

*zips lips*

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
My real name is Bekah, but I go by Kodabear18 on Fanfiction.net.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
Well, I am in High-school. I have three dogs –one of which my pen-name comes from. And I like to think that I’m awesome! (But my family may say otherwise…)

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I read most of my free-time –when I’m not writing, but I also like to sketch and paint with acrylics sometimes. :D

What are some things you never leave home without?
Whatever book I am currently reading, along with my IPhone (whom I have taken to naming Benny).

What are some of your favorite books?
Anything written by Cassandra Clare, Lord of the Rings, The entire LUX series, Star Wars, Little Women (I read this when I was little, and it just kind of stuck :}), Harry Potter… I could literally go on all day. I read A LOT.

Also, does Death Note count as a book? ‘Cause it’s a manga, but… *shrugs*

Favorite TV shows and movies?
I am currently obsessed with The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Doctor Who, Supernatural, The Office, and Game of Thrones TV-show wise. And I really like anything horror-related movie-wise –zombies, vampires, apocalyptic, etc. :D

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
David Boreanaz, because he is not only exceptionally delicious-looking, but he has played a ton of badass characters and would most likely know what to do. Also, I just really like him. Even if he is more than double my age… *sobs*

Jennifer Lawrence, because… why not? She’s just really awesome, and she would probably help keep everybody calm by cracking jokes about food every five minutes.

Bear Grylls. He’s the most sensible person, to me, to be on a deserted island with. He would probably be my only hope for living for more than three days, and he might actually know how to get OFF of the island. See? I can think rationally if I try…

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Prague!!! I’d actually love to live in Prague, but sadly I’m stuck in the U.S. for a few more years. I totally freaked out when Cassandra Clare mentioned Prague in City of Lost Souls though, I have to say… like, I had a total fangirl-attack, and started screaming. My parents were not only concerned for my mental health, but they feared that our neighbors might’ve called the police. They didn’t though, thankfully.

Do you have any pet peeves?
I CANNOT STAND it when people confuse ‘they’re’ with ‘their’. Or ‘your’ with ‘you’re’. Especially when said people are in high-school, and have been learning how to spell words correctly for YEARS!!! It makes me want to put my fist through a wall. But I usually don’t end up doing that, obviously… Also, I’m slightly OCD when it comes to correct grammar. Y’know, if you didn’t gather that already.

I also hate it when people mistreat books. My sister once threw away the dust-jacket of a really good book, and I just about murdered her. I slapped her numerous times on her arm, and she even had the nerve to laugh about it!

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
I could literally live off of pizza. It’s my favorite. And I’d have to say either ice-cream for my comfort food, or hot-Cheetos. It really depends on the mood I’m in.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
It’s a three-way tie between Sandalwood; the smell of evergreens in the springtime –I know, I’m weird; and Old Spice. I really like all three of those though, so…

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I like punk-rock and classic-rock. Really anything that’s loud and has a good drum solo somewhere in the mix. My favorites, though, are Sleeping with Sirens, Framing Hanley, Mayday Parade, and Green Day. But my list is far too long to actually list here.

I hate, LOATHE, country music. It just sounds tang-y, and annoying, and… *sigh* And a lot of people find me completely weird when I say this, because I live in a town that has tons of farms and country-people in it. Everybody else seems to like that tang-y stuff, but it makes me cringe!

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I could be classified as ‘anti-social’. And I would totally agree with that classification.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Chocolate for ice-cream, and vanilla for most everything else.
Silver or gold? Silver, all the way.
Apple or PC? Apple for phones and tablets; PC for computers. (Unless you’re into music-editing, then I’d pick Apple for computers)
White wine or red wine? I’ve never had either, but I guess that I’d choose red wine. It just gives me a good ‘vibe’.
Liquor or beer? Again, never had either. But if I had to choose, it’d be liquor. My best-friend’s dad used to drink beer every now and then, and it smelled disgusting.
Coffee or tea?  Coffee. I would be a complete zombie without it.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in during summer and fall; get up early during winter and spring. (I like to watch it snow in the mornings during the last two seasons so…)

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
The Mortal Instruments!!! I’ve never actually read anything besides TMI, and I’ve never written for anything else. :D

What kind of environment do you write in?
I turn on music and plop down onto my giant-beanbag. Simple, yet comfy.

Ever write in your PJs?
How else would I?

How bout naked?
No… unless you count under my clothes, then yes. Yes, I have.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
I just write what I feel, really. If I’m happy, sad, slightly depressed… it all ends up somehow in my writing. And no, I don’t normally bring my life into my writing. My life is really boring, so… there’s not a lot to write about.

Do you write on a schedule?
I try to, but I usually just end up writing whenever I feel inspired.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I usually have an idea in mind as of what I want the main plot to be, but then I just end up winging it. I’m really bad at conforming to one single idea, and if I try to follow a plan I’ll usually end up changing everything, so… yeah. I just normally end up writing what I feel like, and then adding things when I edit my stories at the end.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Not really. I do like to listen to music or a movie while I write, though. So, I guess that counts, right?

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I’d like to think that I’m good at writing humor and comedy, but I don’t really know. I do know though, that I’m not very great at writing romance. I just normally feel awkward writing it, but my readers seem to enjoy it, so… What can you do? *shrugs*

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Updating on time. I always feel like I’m letting down the people who’ve reviewed and followed my stories when I can’t update as often as I would like. It makes me feel icky, and I don’t like feeling icky.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
I usually pick a random word for the titles that I think would fit the story best, and then try to mold it into the story later on. I don’t really know how I come up with most of the things I write, so… It’s mostly all just random puns and references jotted down when I think of them.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Probably Clary. She’s really artsy and clumsy, I guess, but then she kind of comes out of her shell and becomes a badass throughout the series. I, though, am everything but the badass part. I did take Karate for twelve years though…

Also Jace. I’m known to be overly-sarcastic in everyday life, and I have a lack of friends to prove it. I probably come off as slightly hostile sometimes, so…

And Simon, because I’m just the slightest bit of a complete and total nerd!

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
I’d have to say Stained is my favorite. It is written differently than my other stories, and I really enjoy writing from the narrator’s perspective, instead of first-person. It’s just a lot more fun to me, writing about characters, instead of writing as if I am them. I don’t know.

My favorite story concept-wise would have to be one that I am currently working on. I am going to write it completely before I post it on Fanfiction.net, though. It’s called ‘The Promotion’. :D

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
They know that I write fanfics, but I have never told them what fandom I’m writing for or anything. I have various passwords set on my laptop and all of the rest of my electronics, so there’s really no way that they could find out what I’m writing. It’s not that I’m embarrassed about what I write or anything like that. I just… want this to be MINE, I guess.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
City of Heavenly Fire, hands down! Is there really any competition? Really?

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Probably this interview, actually.  This, and that ‘Story Spotlight’ thing that you did a while ago. I think that it’s really cool that I’m being recognized as an actual ‘author’, so… It just makes me feel accomplished, I guess. :)

But I do really enjoy all of the compliments that I get on my writing. They all end up making me smile in the end. :D

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I don’t allow anything anybody may say affect my life. Opinions are opinions, and everybody is entitled to their own, but that doesn’t mean that I have to take anything to heart. If somebody tells me something that is constructive and helpful to improve my writing, then yes, I will try out their advice and see if it helps me in any way while I write. But if somebody may tell me something that is just rude, or completely unhelpful in any way to my writing, I will just forget about it and move on with my life. Words are just words, and I don’t have to read them if I don’t feel like it. :D

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
I love how so many people appreciate the poetry and references that are used in this fandom. There’s just so much intelligence that kind of floats around within us, and the inside-jokes are endless. Like, if I talked to my sister how I do to some of the people of Fanfiction. net, she would just stare at me like I was crazy. I can’t talk about all of these awesome things with normal people, and I love that I can actually communicate with other fan-people within this fandom. It’s very welcoming, and so far everybody is really nice so… yeah

What I hate about this fandom though, is that I can’t actually find other people in the fandom outside of the internet. I’ve never actually met anyone in real-life that has read these books. I might if I ever actually get to go tone of those reading conventions, but for now… *shrugs* It might just be because I live in a relatively small town though…

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
I am probably one of the worst people to ask for advice from… I’m what people would call a pessimist, so… But I guess that if I had to give someone advice, I would just tell them to keep writing. And reading. The more you read, the more writing tips that your mind picks up. You won’t even notice it, until you try writing and you notice just how much you’ve improved. I don’t actually know if this works for anyone else, but this is what happened to me. I just recently started to get into reading a couple of years ago, and now that I look back on my earlier stories I notice all of the mistakes that I made.

Long story short, just keep trying. Keep writing. :D

(Wow, that advice sucked…)

Have any recommendations?
Ascension by Niknakz93, this is one of my all-time favorite fics. It’s just so awesome and hilarious to read, and it is written really well, too.

Also anything by ddpjclaf. She’s amazing.

Really, there are just too many for me to list them all. :D

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
On Fanfiction.net, but of course you already knew that. I have also been thinking about making an Instagram or a Tumblr account for my fanfics. I don’t really know yet, but we’ll see!

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thank you, it was really fun to do!!!

So yeah, you need to go read her stuff. She’s adorably awesome and I can’t wait to read her other fics. *squeal* So yeah, go read and leave her some love!

Author Spotlight: NiteFang

Hello my lovely readers!!! I am bringing you another awesome author today! *Cue trumpets*

Okay, so this chick is actually quite the little fandom jumper. She’s written for OUAT (where I found her), Chronicles of Narnia, Maximum Ride, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Life with Derek and Supernatural. I can’t even pretend I have any clue about some of those fandoms, but I was intrigued enough to skim her HP and GOT stuff…still seriously great. Anyhoo, she’s awesome and I’m gonna let her “talk”. :)

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie. And you are?
I’m Ashley or Ash, better known as nitefang.

So tell me a little bit about yourself.
I’m Filipino and currently a college senior, majoring in Anthropology and minoring in creative writing. At the risk of making this sound like an application, I graduate in the spring. However, I don’t know what to do with my life beyond that point. I just wanna write stories forever.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
My effing thesis. All of my regrets in signing up for that. But before that, I slept and read a lot. I’m so lazy.

What are some things you never leave home without?
A spare hair tie, definitely. And my phone—never know when I need to type out an errant story idea or field a call from my grandparents who want to make sure their plants are still alive.

What are some of your favorite books?
I mean, apart from Harry Potter, of course, I loved reading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown—just the Robert Langdon books as a whole. I have a thing about fun adventure, treasure-hunting things. I was also very big on Meg Cabot and the James Patterson YA series, Maximum Ride. I also devoured the Warriors series—the one about cats. I never knew I could be so invested in feline relationships.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
The thing about me and TV shows—okay, I watch a lot of shows (The Blacklist, Outlander, Hart of Dixie, Once Upon a Time, Haven), but I can’t say I have a favorite. Maybe Avatar: The Last Airbender.

My all-time favorite movie has to be Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It came out on my birthday, and when I got the DVD, I watched that movie every morning for at least two years. At one point in my life, I could quote the entire thing. I recently watched Kingsmen, and oh, my God. Highly recommend it.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Bear Grilles, for obvious reasons. Our survival would rest entirely on his shoulders. Jennifer Lawrence would be there to keep our spirits alive. And then I’d throw in Nick Jonas to sing covers in the background as the soundtrack to our endeavors—plus, you know, eye candy.

What is one place you’d love to visit?
New Zealand, for sure. Lord of the Rings, bro. That’d be the only time I’d agree to run around some hills—when I’m pretending to be Aragorn or something (“Legolas! What do your elf eyes see?”)

Do you have any pet peeves?
The incorrect pronunciation of Iraq and Iran. It’s not EYE-rack and EYE-ran; it’s IH-rack and IH-ran.

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
I adore microwave Salisbury steak. I will willingly die from it. As for comfort foods, I love my mom’s chicken and asparagus soup.

What’s your favorites scent—one that says “home” to you?
Home smells like fried garlic and onions. Granted, I wouldn’t make my car smell like that, but you know…

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I still listen to the music I grew up with. Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Celine Dion, even Wilson Phillips. I’m pretty well-versed with Top 40’s pop and stuff, but it’s not always my go-to. I also listen to soundtracks of movies, basically anything by Hans Zimmer.

I cannot stand incomprehensible rap. Take from that what you will.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I’m only 22, and already I have at least five white hairs somewhere on my head. And that’s not counting the god-knows-how-many I’ve already pulled out. And before you tell me not to do that, I have black hair. It stands out.

Just for some insight into you, pick one. Feel free to tell why or why not.
Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate, all the way. I thought Fig Newtons were full of chocolate before I ever had one. So much disappointment.
Silver or gold? Silver. My skin tone’s too yellow for gold to complement it.
Apple or PC? Apple. More reliability. Windows was a pain.
White whine or red wine? Red.
Liquor or beer? Liquor.
Coffee or tea? Coffee.
Sleep in or get up early? Early.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
I wrote for Glee and Once Upon a Time, but now I’m finally getting into Harry Potter. I’ve been reading HP fics since I got into fandoms when I was in my sophomore year of high school. I also read Hunger Games and Firefly. It really depends on my mood.

What kind of environment do you write in?
I write mostly when I’m alone. I like to recite dialogue out loud before I write it.

Ever write in your PJ’s?
All the time.

How ‘bout naked?
Uh, I live with my grandparents, my mom, three uncles, and my aunt. There’ll be none of that.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
If I think up a plot that I really like or that I find interesting, that’s how it usually starts. Very rarely have I actually used a real-life experience as kindling for a story.

Do you put real life into your stories?
Surprisingly, no. I use aspects of personalities from other stories and sort of mesh them around together. Only once or twice have I ever put something real into a story, and if I did, it was a throwaway comment.

Do you write on a schedule?
My life doesn’t follow a schedule, really, so the trend persists. It happens when it happens.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I always plan. I can’t help it. I like to get my stories all down in some form so I can pull back and rearrange things to the benefit of the overall plot. I can never do things on the fly, and the one time I did… Well, I’m still revising the story today. It’s been four years. I need to move on. But I can’t. It hurts.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
If I’m writing fanfiction, I make sure that while I am in the process of writing the story, the only fanfic I read is of that fandom I’m writing for—so that I’m not mixing up characters and atmospheres. I made the mistake of getting into Glee fanfiction while I was writing my Life With Derek fic, and it was a mess. I still haven’t finished it.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I’m much better writing humor or fluff than I am angst or any kind of sadness. I don’t know how to make myself do it, to get into that kind of mindset or emotional state to be able to properly articulate that kind of feeling.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Capturing the atmosphere of the story. Glee fics were easy for me because I was still in school, but when it comes to Harry Potter, it’s a little difficult because of the influence of the movies on the books on top of the preconceived setting readers already developed. So when you’re reading, you’ve kind of got this expectation, this set feeling. When I think Harry Potter, I immediately jump to the Great Hall, with the warm woods, the golden light, the clatter of cutlery, and even the bell-like music. There are times when I want to sustain that feeling, that atmosphere, and other times when I need to move away from it. I like getting to the point with my stories, so it’s often going to be dialogue-heavy, not much scenery. So it’s a bit of a struggle.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Definitely. That’s why I like to plan things out in their entirety so that each section gets a heading, which is a chapter title that encompasses the action of the chapter. Then the entire story has a title that encapsulates what’s going on or is a key point in the story. I like to be witty too, but if it doesn’t happen, I can’t force it.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Draco Malfoy. I’m not a big fan of him because no one has the excuse to be a piece of shit to other people, but his struggle during the sixth and seventh books—with his life and his family on the line—really hit me kind of hard. I’m very family-oriented so if they happened to be indoctrinated into the agenda of a sociopath,  I wouldn’t feel that I’d have the choice to leave them. I’d stay and try to keep them alive as best as I could, even if that meant screwing myself up.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write? Which of your stories is your favorite concept-wise?
The stories I most enjoyed writing are my Harry Potter fics. I love being able to weave stories around magical elements and play with characters that I’ve loved since I was small. There’s just something about that world that elicits a lot of feelings for me, and being able to submerse myself in that as a writer is kind of dream-come-true-ish.

Concept-wise, my favorite is the one I’m writing now—it’s unpublished, but it’s about Fred and Hermione being caught in a bit of an explosion that traps them in a book of Muggle fairy tales, and they’ve got to play through the stories, with the unhelpful aid of their friends and family outside of the book. Being able to put Harry Potter and Disney together is the best thing.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
No.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
“Mash-Up” from Glee. “Snow Drifts/There’s No Place Like Home” from Once Upon a Time. “The Cave of Two Lovers” from Avatar the Last Airbender.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
I consider two to be the best—one had a person crying from laughter in the middle of the night and trying to stifle it because everyone else in their house was asleep, and the other had a person crying because of how well I was able to articulate exactly how they felt about something. Being able to affect people in that way is one thing I strive to do as a writer.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I take it as a means to improve. Unless I know they’re absolutely wrong or doing it vindictively, then it’s received and accepted with a good dose of humor.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
Ship wars. It’s always going to boil down to ship wars that ruin fandoms. It happened to me in Glee, and it made me take a break from Once Upon a Time a couple of months ago. I’ve managed to stay far away from it in Harry Potter.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
There’s no such thing as a writer’s block. It’s just a normal hitch in storytelling that you’ve either got to power through or take a break and write a different scene. Visualizing is a great way to help you write, setting your characters and even finding a good song that matches the mood. Writer’s block isn’t a good enough excuse to put things down and stop writing entirely.

When I say “take a break,” I mean skip to a scene that’s more vivid in your mind and start off from there too. If this is something you’re absolutely stuck on, go from a different angle, start from a different point, use a different character’s perspective, or even ask yourself if it’s really that necessary.

And do not ever say you’re not going to read a genre because you don’t want to step on any author’s toes and then write in it. Some dumb bitch said that in my advanced creative writing workshop, and we all literally stopped and stared. Her story sounded almost exactly like a published author’s novel, and we kept telling her that, she was like, “No, I’ve never read his work. I don’t read this genre so I can have plausible deniability.”

I have never wanted to throw my entire backpack (with my laptop, notebooks, and textbook in it) at a person so badly.

Have any recommendations?
If you’re a Dramione fan, read anything by Bex-Chan. If you like Chloe Sullivan (from Smallville) at all, read Tarafina/Sarcasticfina.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
I’m nitefang on Tumblr, fanfiction.net, and AO3! :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

See? She’s smart and awesome and I can’t get enough. :) So go stalk, uh-I mean, read her stories and let her know of her awesomeness. :)

Author Spotlight: Malmo722

Hey darlins! So, here’s another amazing author for you to check out.. She’s a relative newcomer to my fandoms, although she’s been writing for Twilight for a few years. But yeah, she’s…yeah. Awesome. She’s not afraid to take risks with her characters, which is hugely refreshing. I mean, I hate what actually happened in the story (she mentions it below so you’ll know what I mean) but it’s the way the story went…and it made sense. And I was so totally stoked that she took the chance. So yeah. Anyways, I’ll let you hear from her and I’ll see you below.

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
My pen name is Malmo722 but my real name is Julia.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m Canadian, 27 and I work in architecture. I’m not married and I have no kids but I do have a boyfriend that I love very much. We’ve been together for almost 5 years. That’s about it, I’m not exciting.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I read, watch TV, got to the movies, listen to music, cross stitch, hang out with friends, family and my boyfriend. My life is pretty basic.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My phone, headphones and money. Those are pretty much the only things I need. Sometimes a book if I don’t plan on writing.

What are some of your favorite books?
My favorite book is East of Eden by George Steinbeck. I’m also a big fan of all the works of Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk and Kurt Vonnegut.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
Movies: I love all the movies directed by David Fincher, I think he’s a perfect director and makes some of the best movies today. I also love Lost In Translation, American Beauty, The Cell, Reality Bites and That Thing You Do! There are more but we’d be here for days if I listed them all.

TV: I love Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Rec, Archer, True Blood, Breaking Bad, Dawson’s Creek, Gilmore Girls, Brooklyn 99, Friends – there are so many. I watch way too much TV.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Chris Evans because he’s stupid handsome and I feel like he would know how to build shelter.
Jennifer Lawrence to entertain me.
Bear Grylls because he knows how to survive in the wilderness.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
I’d love to go to Iceland. I’m very interested in all the Nordic countries and would to go to any of them.

Do you have any pet peeves?
People who chew with their mouths open, it makes my skin crawl.

What are some of your favorite foods? How bout comfort foods?
I love burgers, bacon, cherries and chocolate. I don’t really have a comfort food, I just love all food equally.

Whats your favorite scent-one that says hometo you?
I love the smell of freshly cut grass, clean laundry and lemons.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely cant stand?
I love all kinds of rock, 90’s hip-hop and rap, boy bands, 90’s girl bands and electronica. I hate, hate, hate country music.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I am petrified of the shark from Finding Nemo. Like panic attack inducing afraid of him and sharks in general.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Chocolate because it’s delicious and vanilla is the worst.
Silver or gold? Silver because it looks better on my pale skin.
Apple or PC? I don’t really care as long as the computer works.
White wine or red wine? White wine.
Liquor or beer? Beer.
Coffee or tea?  Tea – I come from an English background so tea.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep and I have never gotten along. I go to bed late and wake up early.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
It depends on what I’m in love with at the time. I started in the Twilight fandom but now I switch back and forth from True Blood and Sherlock.

What kind of environment do you write in?
I write in all environments, I write at home, on the subway, at work, everywhere. If I have a free moment I’m usually writing. I usually write better if I can listen to music.

Ever write in your PJs?
Always.

How bout naked?
Probably, I love being naked so I’ve probably written naked.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Usually they are fantasies, something I wish was true but isn’t. Summer Nights was inspired by a dream. One of my Twilight fics, Not Dark Yet, was inspired by a Snow Patrol song. Music inspires almost everything I write.

I do pull from real life, people always say to write what you know, so I write what I know.  Of course, not huge events but tiny nuances.

Do you write on a schedule?
No, I find if I’m pressured to write I won’t produce a quality product.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I try plan out my stories but it never really turns out the way I want it to. Summer Nights is not going to end the way I originally planned. I hope it all turns out for the best.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
I always thank my readers in my A/N.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I like romance but I also like writing science fiction and horror. I also love writing about people who are famous and their lives behind the scenes. I love dialogue, I think banter is my strength.

I suck at writing smut. At least I think I do.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
It sucks when something in your story changes but it conflicts with something that’s already been posted, you can’t go back and change it to create a more fluid story.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
I usually use song titles unless something comes to me. I find titling my stories and chapters incredibly difficult. Usually if a song influences a chapter that becomes the chapters name.

Which character do you identify with the most?
A little bit of myself is in all the characters I write so I find it easy to identify with all of them. Usually whatever POV I’m writing from is the character I identify with most.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
I love writing romance but I also enjoy sci-fi, horror, angst and drama. My favorite story concept wise is Not Dark Yet. I wrote it in the Twilight fandom and its about the last survivors of the zombie apocalypse, all the characters have abilities and it’s about them trying to find a safe haven. If I was ever to write original fiction, I would create a series based off of this.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
I don’t go into details because I’m still rather embarrassed by my writing but yes I talk to them all the time about it. My mom used to actually read some of it. They are very supportive and love that I have found something I love so much.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
Like most in the True Blood fandom I love book four/season 4. I am an Eric lover and this highlights him in a way that I like. I think they really dropped the ball with Eric, I think he was one of the most interesting characters and they just kind of wrote him off because, you know, Bill and Sookie just had to be together in the show. I never finished the books to be honest.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
I’ve received many but I always like when people tell me I’m a good enough writer to write actual fiction. It actually makes me really want to try to write original works.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
It depends on what it is. If it’s actually constructive criticism I listen. Usually people tell me that my grammar and spelling isn’t very good, it’s my most common criticism, but I try very hard to be better. I know I’ll never be flawless at it but I improve with every chapter I write.

If its just non-sense or people being mean for the sake of being mean, I ignore it.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
In the True Blood fandom, I hate how much everyone hate Bill. I hate him, I do but I had Sookie sleep with him in a story because it made sense for her to and I lost readers. I just think it’s crazy. In the Twilight fandom I hate how the most popular stories always feature the most weak version of Bella and in the Sherlock fandom I hate the lack of AU. They are always detective stories and I wish people would write outside of that more. In general, I prefer fan fiction that is nothing like the actual canon.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
It doesn’t matter how many reviews you have, it doesn’t matter if someone doesn’t like it, it doesn’t matter if you aren’t an amazing writer, if you love it, just keep writing. When it comes down to it you are the most important part of your writing and when you stop writing for yourself and start writing for reviews or what others will think is when it stops being fun and you’ll start to hate it.

Have any recommendations?
In the True Blood fandom I’m finding it hard to find stories I actually like. I started reading one call Sweet Home Louisiana by Melodious Nocturn and Sookie the Vampire Slayer by Sleepy Lotus. In the Sherlock fandom there is a story called Performance in a Leading Role by Mad Lori is probably the best fan fiction I have ever read.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thanks so much for asking! I had a lot of fun doing this.

So yeah. She’s awesome and you should really go read her stuff. Leave her some love cause everyone loves to be loved! :) Enjoy lovelies!

Author Spotlight: VictoryInTrouble

Hallo lovelies! I am bringing you another completely awesome author to check out. This chick writes for the TB/SVM fandom and her story Northman’s Nanny is another one of those that brought me back into the fandom. She writes real for lack of a better way to put it. Her characters are more real than a lot of real people I know, which is a feat. So, yeah. She rocks and I’m gonna shut up so you can read what she has to say. :)

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
HI! I’m VictoryInTrouble. Some people call me Vic, but I don’t put my real name online.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I am in my 30s, I have two boys who make me smile and want to tear my hair out sometimes, a husband who makes me laugh and want to strangle him sometimes, and a dog who I love but could give away at times. I have never been a writer before this last year. In fact, I used to hate writing but I never really tried to do any creative writing. It was mostly reports and essays. Writing creatively is much more fun!

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I am taking care of my family, reading, watching TV, drawing, or my current obsession- making banners now that I can work photoshop somewhat well.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My purse, my kid’s epipen, phone, a hair elastic, and chapstick!

What are some of your favorite books?
My genre of choice is science fiction so my favorites reflect that. I love Darwin’s Radio and sequel by Greg Bear(or anything by him, really), The Entire and The Rose series by Kay Kenyon, Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress, The Time Traveler’s Wife though the movie was not so great. I also love murder mysteries and Mary Higgins Clark was always my favorite author for that. Sometimes I want fun so I read Janet Evanovich or a sexy romance novel. I am in a book club and while I wouldn’t pick out most of the books we read, my favorite has been Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Brunt.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
TV shows I currently enjoy are New Girl, Doctor Who, Modern Family, Blackish, Marco Polo, How To Get Away With Murder, Walking Dead. Older shows that I can watch again and again are Jeeves and Wooster, Coupling, Gavin and Stacy. My favorite movie is A Fish Called Wanda.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Dominic Monaghan because he’s a crazy adventurer, he could handle anything creepy crawly or deadly, and he’s a little cutie.

Alexander Skarsgard because he’s sexy as hell, also likes adventure, and his massive body could keep me warm at night.

Jem Stansfield from the BBC show Bang Goes the Theory, because he’s super smart, a crazy inventor, and he’s also pretty cute.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Greece. I’ve always wanted to go there.

Do you have any pet peeves?
My pet peeves are liars, people who are obnoxiously loud in a public place where it is inappropriate, and loud chewers and breathers. My husband says I have mouse hearing but he’s just loud!

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
My favorite foods are those that mix lots of different tastes together. So I love soups and big salads, I love Thai and Korean food. I’m an adventurous eater so there isn’t much I don’t like. Comfort foods would be my mom’s cheese pie or collard greens, my husband’s sage stuffing or pho– things that I’ve been eating for a long time and always bring good memories.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
Hmm, I don’t know if I have one but I like vanilla and coconut.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I like all kinds of music. Right now I seem to be into music with a strong male lead- Tom Odell, Ed Sheeran, Hozier, Paolo Nutini, Amos Lee, and my all time fav is Chris Isaak.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
When I was a child I wanted to be a clown when I grew up…now they scare the sh*t out of me!

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  chocolate if it’s good quality, but not for ice cream
Silver or gold? silver
Apple or PC? Apple
White wine or red wine? White, can’t drink red unless it’s Lambrusco because that’s sweet like a Moscato.
Liquor or beer? ha ha- both!
Coffee or tea?  Tea unless my husband goes and gets me coffee on the weekend
Sleep in or get up early? sleep in, definitely, if I had my choice.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
I’ve only ever read/written in the SVM/TB fandom. I didn’t even know fanfiction existed before 2013 when I discovered it.

What kind of environment do you write in?
Usually with music playing, in bed or on the couch. Sometimes with kids running around, though I prefer late at night when I can concentrate better.

Ever write in your PJs?
yup!

How bout naked?
I don’t think so. I have no privacy with my 3 guys so I am mostly always dressed unless the door’s locked. ;)

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Inspiration comes from my imagination or a picture I saw, something I witnessed. My Captive story was inspired by a Game of Thrones gif even though I don’t watch the show. My Shave and a Haircut story was inspired by a trip to the salon where I watched a man getting shaved. I definitely pull things from real life into my stories.

Do I put real life into my stories?
Yes, I sometimes will have a character’s favorite movie be mine, or favorite food, etc. I might give them a background I know something about so it’s easier to write.

Do you write on a schedule?
no, I fit it in whenever I have time.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I like to have a general plan but it always always changes as I write. What I find more important for me and what I spend the most time on, is having a character identity. I find that if I have thought well about my character, then whatever I come up with for them will be believeable and I will be able to keep the story on track.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
I can’t think of any. I like music when I write.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I don’t think I am that good with action. I’m also not so great with supernatural stuff. My imagination is just not there. I find romance is easier, though sex scenes are some of the toughest to write and to keep fresh and not repetitive.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Um, maybe because in this fandom, people like the vampire stories and I tend to write all human because it’s easier for me.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
For story titles, I try to think about the theme of the story and what, overall, I want to talk about. I hardly ever do chapter titles because it’s too much effort. For Getting It On, each chapter title came from the song that went with the chapter. In Bookstore, each chapter title rhymes, but I may have shot myself in the foot with that one! We’ll see!

Which character do you identify with the most?
That’s tough…I’m not sure. I tend to play around with characters a lot. I think I identify with Sookie the way I write her but I have elements of Eric too.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
My favorite to write…that’s another tough one. I really liked writing Shave, which I just finished, because writing the letters was fun and easy. I love writing the Bookstore story because I’m writing with a good friend and she is awesome and funny and she has helped me keep the story light-hearted, which I have some trouble with on my own. Concept-wise, it may be Captive, which is a departure from what I normally do but has been a good challenge.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
Not often.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
I have never read the SVM books. (shocking, I know!) I didn’t discover this fandom until the series was almost finished and nobody liked the ending so I decided not to start them. As far as TB, the episode that made me sit up and say, “Wow, who is that actor?” was Ep 2:9, I Will Rise Up, so I think that’s my favorite. Once I found out about Askars, I started reading fanfiction and the rest, as they say, is history!

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
It’s a toss up between being told that my characters are “real,” and being told that my stories make someone feel really good.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
If it’s ranting and juvenile, I laugh. I was kind of surprised when I first encountered some of the hate for Sookie that I got when she had her first fight with Eric in Northman’s Nanny. I sometimes get frustrated because a lot of times, the person just didn’t understand what was said vs. what was thought in the character’s head, which I guess is the downfall to first person perspective. That can be unclear if you don’t read closely. So a valid criticism, I will think about, a ranty one, I will laugh about. It doesn’t really bother me that much because most reviews are positive.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
Favorite is the fact that even though the show and books are done, the fandom is still active. Least fav is that the shows and books are done and I’m afraid everything will die down now and I feel like I just found everyone! :)

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Read a lot, look up anything you are uncertain about, and just write!

Have any recommendations?
Anything on my site under the people I follow is awesome!

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
I have a wordpress site, victoryintrouble.wordpress.com and I’m on fanfiction.net under the same name. I am thinking of joining facebook but haven’t yet.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thank you, Kelpie! This was fun!
