Author Spotlight: Lara Kingsley

Woo hoo! I have another awesome author for y’all to check out! I’ve been delving into the recesses of my fanfic.net favorites to get back into the TB/SVM/OUAT swing of things and this chick caught my eyes immediately and I was like “AH! YES!!!”. And thus began my descent into the madness of re-reading her Dead Briefs series. :)

She’s seriously so frickin’ sweet it’s like…ridiculous. And talented…if she hadn’t mentioned it, I would never have known English wasn’t her first language. Any of the very few mistakes I happened to notice I figured were autocorrect fuckups that she didn’t catch. And yeah, I’m the queen of ducking autocorrect. So yeah. Like I said, mega talent here .I’m gonna leave you to read what she has to say and I’ll see you at the bottom. :)

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
I’m Cynthia or better known on the web as Lara Kingsley.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
Well I’m a 29, nearly 30 year old eternal single girl from Quebec City in Canada. I’m a lifelong princess (I do live in a walled city with a castle after all!), the oldest of 3 kids. I’m very closed to my family (my parents live on the first floor of our building and I live on the third floor) especially my 18 year old baby brother and my dad (I’m a daddy’s little girl). Oh and I’m French Canadian.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
Well I work (a girl’s gotta pay her rent, right?). I’m a memory maker or as most people usually call it a Front Desk clerk/Concierge at a hotel in my hometown. When I’m not behind the desk at the hotel, I’m either exploring my historical hometown (there’s always new stuffs to discover), reading romance novel, binge watching TV shows or playing Assassin’s Creed on my PS3.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My tab. That was the greatest gift to myself I ever bought. I’m not an iPhone or Android phone type of person (my cell phone is actually an older generation Samsung flip keyboard), so my tab is easier to carry around than a laptop.

What are some of your favorite books?
I gotta confess that I’m a huge romance novel reader. My bookcases are full with historical romance novels. Favourite books? There’s the classics, pretty much any Jane Austen books (especially Pride & Prejudice) and Jane Eyre. I also really love the Outlander series by Diana Gaballdon. Of course I loved the SVM (the early one of course, CH really f*cked things up in the end). These days I’m re-reading a vampire series by a Canadian author, Lynsay Sands, the Argeneau vampires.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
Even though in the end it disappointed me, I’m a Trubie at heart. I used to be a huge Stargate fan and a Lost fan when they were on the air. Right now I’m addicted to Outlander, Jane the Virgin, Reign (even though it’s historically inaccurate) and Game of Thrones. As for movies, I’m a geek… The Star Wars Original Trilogy is a favourite of mine. I also love comedy (Hot Fuzz, Robin Hood Men in Tights, just to name a few) and Disney princesses’ movies.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
This one is obvious! Alexander Skarsgärd, of course! Oh, I can bring three? Liam Hemsworth and Sam Heughan! These three are my yummy triumvirate ;) And the three of them are tall, strong men so they’d be able to protect me and help me survive.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
I’m a history buff so anywhere in Europe, but if I had to choose one… Great Britain would be my choice. Incorporate both England and Scotland ;)

Do you have any pet peeves?
People who argue even when they know they’re totally wrong.

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
I’m French Canadian so… Poutine! For those not familiar with it it’s French fries with cheese curds and gravy. Oh and cheesecake! Lots and lots of cheesecake!

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
Vanilla and lavender, they remind me of both my grandmothers who sadly aren’t with us anymore.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I’m a classically trained musician (I was in a music program in high school and played the trumpet) so I love classical music – my colleagues at work don’t and I bug them all the time by putting classical music on Songza in the hotel lobby. Otherwise I listen pretty much anything from Elvis to Lady Gaga.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I have four tattoos and one on my back says ‘We aim to please’. Yep it’s a quote from Fifty Shades of Grey, but that’s not why I have it.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  Chocolate
Silver or gold?  Gold, Not yellow but either white or pink
Apple or PC? PC
White wine or red wine? Red
Liquor or beer?  I don’t drink a lot, but when I do I prefer liquor, hard one.
Coffee or tea?  Hi, my name is Cynthia and I’m a coffee addict
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
True Blood and SVM, of course. I also read lots of Veronica Mars fics, some Once Upon A Time (though for this fandom I stick with Gremma fic even if I’m also a Captain Swan fan) fics and Pride and Prejudice fics.

What kind of environment do you write in?
On my couch with music playing in the background.

Ever write in your PJs?
Mostly in my PJs. First thing I do when I come back from work is take off my uniform and put on comfy PJs

How bout naked?
I don’t think so! I have huge windows in my living room with very thin curtains. Wouldn’t want my neighbours to catch a peek ;)

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Most of it come from my need to fix thing. Dead Briefs came up because I wanted to rewrite True Blood with a smarter Sookie with a different upbringing. As for Your Presence Still Lingers Here I just wanted to fix the f*ckery that the writers made.

Do you put real life into your stories?
Not really, but my upcoming fic, Do Not Disturb, will be set in the hospitality industry and some of Sookie’s background will be based on myown past work experiences. Some of my former colleagues  will even make appearance as  True Blood characters.

Do you write on a schedule?
I try to get one chapter a week, but with real life and  work…

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I plan, a lot. For Dead Briefs I have what I call a Bible. Since every chapter is a Tome and everything is planned in advance.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Superstitions? Not really. As for rituals…. I always write with music. The type depend on what type of chapter I’m writing. For the chapter with action I go with classic rock, for scene that are more sensual I go with ballads or Moonlight Sonata

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
Action scenes, I have a hard time writing those.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Even though I’ve read my fair share of bodice reapers, writing sex scenes still makes me nervous

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Not really. In fact Dead Briefs was known as True Blood Project for a couple of chapters until I asked my readers on fanfiction.net for help (I was so eager to write it that I didn’t even think of a title). As for YPSLH, the title comes from My Immortal by Evanescence

Which character do you identify with the most?
It’a a mix. For the longest time I’ve felt like an outsider, like I didn’t quite fit in  with both my friends and family, so I can identify with Sookie in that aspect. But I also have an old soul, as if I was born in a different era, so I can identify with Eric, Pam and even Bill (yeah, it hurt me to admit that).

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
Dead Briefs Tome 1, since it was the beginning of the saga. But Tome 7 (yeah, it’s not  writen yet but I already know what will happen in it) will probably be one of my favourite.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
No. They know I write fanfic, but I don’t really talk about it.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
For True Blood I’ll say season 4 I Wish I Was The Moon. For Outlander (my new favourite show) it’s easy, The Wedding.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Well being chosen for a fanfic spotlight by you ;) And just everytime someone says how much they like my stories.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I take it as constructive criticism.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
The rabid Bill fans that think that he can do no wrong.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Don’t be afraid to publish your work. Don’t do what I did for a long time.

Have any recommendations?
Anything California Kat writes. Also the work of Gyllene, Meridian, Mistress Jessica and of course Kelpie!

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
There’s  my wordpress page, but I also have a fanfiction.net profile, a fictionpad page and a twcs page.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
The pleasure is all mine ;)

So there you have it lovelies! Like I said, super sweet girl and mega talented. I’m halfway through Dead Briefs Tome 2 (as of when I’m writing this) and I’m going to start on  some of her other stuff after that. So, follow the links above and leave her some love. You totally won’t regret anything you read of hers!

On a Roll

Yeah, that’s me…roly poly Kelpie. I have another chapter for you!

Since people (mainly -read:exclusively- on ff.net) really HATES Lucky’s Sookie, I figured I’d post real quick like to try and stave off the hoard. :o)

Seriously I went this whole time without a bad review and I got slammed after I posted chapter 1…it was insane.

So, here it is, just for your reading pleasure.

Lucky // Chapter 2

Blind Oblivion: Chapter 2

Chapter 2 is up for Blind Oblivion! I was going to post it tomorrow…since I did a spotlight today, but I pressed the wrong button. Ooops….oh well.

Go check it out here and tell me what y’all think. Enjoy!

Author Spotlight: alicialeila

It’s Wednesday (am I the only one who sounds it out as I type??) and that means author spotlight time!

Yaaaaayyyyy! (I’m imagining Kermit going nuts here…)

Anyways, this author is a wonderful girl. She’s very interactive with her reviewers and her story (even if it’s the first one) is the shit. Seriously. I awwwww’ed and cried and laughed…she’s got talent. So…let’s hear about it then, huh?

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
Pen name is alicialeila, but you can call me Alicia!

So, tell me a little about yourself.
Well, I’m a 21 year old university student, majoring in English Lit. I’m Canadian, born and raised in Montreal. I work part time as a waitress. I’m a lover of books, television, and film.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing fanfiction, I’m probably doing schoolwork, which means either reading, writing, or watching films. Or I’m watching television – I’m a huge TV person. I’m very much a homebody, so I spend a lot of time with my family, too. Or I’m on tumblr, which unfortunately is very addictive.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My blackberry, which often doubles as my mp3 player, lipgloss, and I try to keep some change on me, which I use mostly for coffee.

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
I’m a big fan of Russian lit—Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, A Hero of Our Time. I really loved Pat Barker’s Regeneration. I like a lot of ‘classics’ because of school, I suppose.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
I love a lot of TV shows: Six Feet Under, The Wire, How I Met Your Mother, Dexter, The Sopranos, New Girl, The IT Crowd. I also recently got into Hart of Dixie and Teen Wolf because they’re kind of adorable. I’m planning on watching Supernatural soon because the show, and the fandom, seems so awesome.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Askars, for obvious reasons.

Bill Hader, because I love him and he would make me laugh, and that’s important to me.

I’d need a gal pal, so I’d bring Jennifer Lawrence with me. She’s a good actress, close to my age, and from what I’ve seen she’s pretty goofy and hilarious!

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Well, because of my fascination with Russian literature and culture/history, I’ve always wanted to visit Russia. California would be warmer, though, which as a Canadian sounds pretty awesome right now, and I’ve always wanted to visit. Plus, I could potentially run into a certain Swedish actor there. ;)

Do you have any pet peeves?
People who walk very slowly when you’re trying to get somewhere. And when people are constantly on their phones when they shouldn’t be.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
Hmm…I have a tattoo of an ampersand that looks like a heart on my wrist.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate! I’m a typical chocoholic.
Silver or gold? Silver (sorry, vampires!)
Apple or PC? Apple. I just bought a MacBook Pro in September after saving up during the summer, and I love it. It’s my baby.
White wine or red wine? Red wine. But I’m not much of a wine drinker either way.
Liquor or beer? Liquor!
Coffee or tea? Coffee! I’ve become a coffee addict.
Sleep in or get up early? Sleep in. I mostly get up early, and fantasize about sleeping in.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?
Well, I started reading fanfiction about a year ago, and I loved it so much. I came across some really amazing stories and writers. I’ve always been a reader and a writer privately, and fanfiction seemed like a good way to practice writing in a more public venue. I was to shy to do it at first, but finally this year I just decided I’d try it. And I’m glad that I did, it’s been so fun!

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
Honestly, I don’t think so. I don’t think I’ve ever been as invested in a TV/book series as I’ve been with True Blood/SVM, or in a couple like I am with Eric and Sookie. They’re special!

What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I write on my laptop, but I have a little journal that I make notes in—I draw timelines, or plot out vague outlines of chapters. I can pretty much write wherever. I like to write in my room, lounging on my bed, but I’ve actually written at school before, too. I felt weird, but a girl’s gotta do what a girls gotta do!

Ever write in your PJs?
Of course! That’s the comfiest way.

How bout naked? :o)
Ha, I can’t say that I have.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Well, as I’ve only written one story so far, I can honestly say that it’s not really drawn from my life experience. But I think my interpretation of Eric and Sookie’s relationship is a reflection of what I’ve observed about others around me, or in the stories I’ve read or watched. A lot of the inspiration I’ve had, so far, has been from music, or stories from films/books.

Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
Well, for my first story (On a Lonely Night) I didn’t really write on a schedule. I started the story when I was on my winter break, so I wrote as often as I could. When I returned to school, I usually wrote on Thursday nights/Fridays, and tried to post on Saturdays. But when I got really excited about chapters I wrote more often.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
For On a Lonely Night, I wrote chapters as I posted, with a very loose outline in my mind. That worked fine, because I knew it wouldn’t be a very long or complicated story. But in the future, I’m definitely going to take time to plot and outline before I start writing, especially if the stories are going to be longer.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
I like to read other fanfictions that I really love. It gets me exciting about writing again, because I want my story to be finished and as awesome as my favorites!

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Nope, I can’t say that I do.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
So far I’ve only written AH. I’d love to try and write vampires, but I have to have a really awesome story idea first. Maybe I’ll rewatch True Blood and something will come to me. Or maybe I’d try a one shot. I’ve been thinking about writing a sort of fairy-tale/AH story, so maybe that will come to fruition. Lots of possibilities!

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
So far it’s been getting the actual time to sit down and write for a significant amount of time. Unfortunately, it’s not always the top priority, even if I wish it could be. But once I get started, usually it goes pretty well.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
I’m really horrible at thinking of titles, and I’ve always been. Like a lot of authors, I like to use song lyrics or titles. That way they’re snappy, and when people put the story or chapter in context of the song, they can come out with a different or deeper meaning/interpretation.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Sookie, I think, both in my story and in the books/True Blood. I don’t think I’m like her, exactly, but I can relate to her. She’s got an innocence and a sweetness to her, but she also has a fire, and a drive to survive and be happy. I feel like I embody those things as well, and I sometimes struggle to reconcile the two.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
Well, I’ve only written one story. But I really do love it, and I had fun writing the sweetness/adorableness. I’ve got a lot of ideas rolling around in my head, though, that are far more elaborate than On a Lonely Night, so we shall see!

Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
I told my Mom about it, but I don’t quite think she understands what fanfiction is, though I tried to explain it to her. But I told her I’ve been writing a story on this site, and that I’ve gotten a good response. She knows I’ve always aspired to be a writer of some kind, and this is a kind of practice for that, in a way, so I think she thinks it’s a pretty positive thing.

Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
I’m sure these are pretty common favorites, but Dead to The World is my favorite SVM book. As for True Blood, I Will Rise Up is my favorite. I think I’m probably in the majority with these!

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Well, a few people have said that they couldn’t believe it was my first story, and that I was doing a good job for my first one. I was very flattered that I didn’t come off too much like a newbie!

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
So far I haven’t gotten anything too harsh. But as to the criticism I’ve gotten, I just take a moment to consider what the person is saying, without letting it get to me personally. You can’t please everyone, so as long as I’m happy with what I wrote, I hope I won’t become too discouraged by criticism. But I’m sure I’ll have harsher criticism in the future, especially if I write a longer/angstier story.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Well, I think I’m kind of still in that category, but so far all I’ve got to say is just do it. I was nervous to get started with writing and sharing my work, but once I did I found that I loved it. Writing, but also sharing your writing, is kind of a liberating thing, actually, and very cathartic. Make sure you have someone to talk to, also. I don’t use a beta, it’s not really something I thought about, but I’ve got a good friend who reads the story, who I know I can talk to about it, and that helps.

Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
For fanfiction, I’m reading pretty much anything that MissyDee is posting. I also love the story ‘Not So Great Expectations’ by ChanelAddict. ‘Pretty Kitty’ by ficlit78 is a fantastic story, and I know it’s very popular in the True Blood fandom! All the stories that are listed in my Favorites list on my fanfiction.net profile are ones that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, and that have inspired me in some kind of way.

For non-fanfiction, I’m mostly reading stuff for school. But I bought the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series for summer reading!

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
On fanfiction.net:
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3579308/

On WordPress:
http://alicialeila.wordpress.com
(I’m not quite sure that I’ve got the hang of WordPress yet, but I’ve got one!)

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thanks for the awesome questions!

Like I said, she’s awesome and you really need to go read her story…and hopefully she’s got more in the works. I’d suggest dropping her a line and letting her know how freaking amazing you think she is…might help her get u some new reading material. :o)

Author Spotlight: Alskl1ng

Aaaaaaaaand it’s time for another spotlight! Who’s excited??

Anyhoo-this gal is so frickin awesome it’s like…not even funny. (My inner Valley girl is coming out, can you tell?) Her story Day WO/man is pure genius. Every single time I got an alert for an update, I’d be all over that shit like ants on a picnic cake. Seriously…chuck the boys in their room to play, plop the girl in a bouncer or stick a boob in her mouth and devour the newest chapter. That’s how great it is…no lie.

So, now that I’ve completed freaked y’all out with my incessant rambling, I’ll get right to it then.

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?

Aloha Kelly! I’m Vanessa. Penname Alskl1ng on ff.net

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m a SoCal native that now lives on a volcanic rock in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, otherwise known as Hawaii. I surf and swim, but most of the time I’m in an air-conditioned office building reviewing resumes, sorting out employee relations issues and interviewing. Oh the joys of HR.
snorkling

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
Working, watching TV, reading, running, swimming and playing in the ocean with my Swedish husband. (If only those things were in the opposite order.)

What are some things you never leave home without?
My Oakley sunglasses and Hawaiian Tropic tropical lip balm. Work or play, both protect me from the sun.

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
Laurie R. King’s, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes mysteries. I love a good mystery and a strong female lead.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
Modern Family and Top Gear UK (not US). Forrest Gump, Some Like it Hot.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
This is a funny question, considering I live on an island.

If I wanted to get off the island, I would want to be stranded with Russell Coutts (world champion sailor), Craig Hummer (national champion lifeguard – awesome guy) and Bear Grylls. All three would help me survive long enough to eventually navigate off of the deserted rock.

BUT – if I had to be stuck on the island and wanted some company to share coconuts with and play in the surf. My choices would be Alexander Skarsgård, Tom Brady and Kelly Slater.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Rome. Three reasons – the history, the art, the food.

Do you have any pet peeves?
Excessive perfume. (I might be okay with excessive amounts of Encounter, if it’s on a certain Skarsgård)

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I bought my husband at a date auction for $50 – and I set-up the whole thing. As the philanthropy chair for my sorority, I was in charge of putting on events to support our foundation that supported women’s cardiac care. The kick-off event was a date auction. Since I was a senior at the time, I decided against undergrads and sent my sisters to recruit grad students. One of them ended up being an engineering exchange student from Sweden. Six years and many immigration documents later, we’re still together. Best $50 I ever spent.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla
Silver or gold? Silver.
Apple or PC? PC
White wine or red wine? White wine.
Liquor or beer? Beer. It is my best drink option when I’m with Swedes, because they like to drink, a lot. And I can’t keep up when they start with the liquor. It leads to me having random things on my head (see picture) or losing it on the Stockholm subway.
hat
Coffee or tea? Coffee. My Starbucks concoction of choice is a tall latte with coconut syrup.
Sleep in or get up early? Get up early. The early bird catches the wave.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?

Football. I know, right? Kind of crazy reason to start writing, but I really used this story as an outlet to avoid hearing or reading about the aftermath of the Patriots Super Bowl loss in 2012. I’m a Patriots fanatic.

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
Never say never (did I just quote a Justin Bieber song. Shakes head), but right now I’m sticking with SVM/TB. I love the world Charlaine Harris has created; it’s so rich and full of Viking.

What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
The majority of the time I write in my bedroom. I shut the door and just cocoon myself in my fluffy bed and shut the curtains.

Ever write in your PJs?
Yes. All the time.

How bout naked? :o)
Not that I can recall. I sometimes went onto my roof and tried to write and get a tan at the same time. I like to multitask.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
I find inspiration in a lot of things. Sports, history, real life and fashion. The whole beginning of the story is taken from my job. (Don’t tell my boss, I interview people like Eric.)

Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
I tried to post at least once a week. Keeping that schedule was easy when I locked myself in my room, turned on the A/C and pretended I lived in a cold place.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
A little bit of both. I started out with the main framework of DayWOman and then started filling in the pieces as I went. The timeline was important to me and a lot of the things that happened had to fit within that structure.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
I take a break and step away. Looking at Skarsporn always helps. He’s an excellent muse.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
No. I wish I did. That would be fun.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
Hard to say since I’ve only written one story, but I think writing angst would be hard for me.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
The instant gratification of posting. There were times I really shouldn’t have posted, but I did it anyway to get it out. Mistakes and all. But at the same time I loved having that immediate feedback. I never banked chapters, so I would post and then start writing the next chapter sometimes at the direction of the reviews. It made the process of writing very organic.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
I didn’t title my chapters on FF, but I did in LiveJournal. I started out keeping them short and sweet. Making each simply a verb that best described the chapter or alluded to a main point of it.

day WOmanThe title for my story was pretty straightforward and clear – daywoman. I capitalized the letter WO, because I wanted to emphasize her lack of having Eric, her vampire, during the day. It had a certain symmetry to it and it worked well for my story image. Sookie’s days were literally without Eric.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Sookie. Her whole experience of leaving her family to go to school and eventually try to get a job to apply what she learned in a meaningful way was something I went through. I went from southern California to Hanover, New Hampshire for college. Very, very different places, but that change in scenery helped me grow and develop as a person. I know I’m not going to save the world like Sookie, but in my own little pond I hope I can add balance in whatever way I can.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
DayWOman, as it’s the only one I’ve written. I loved writing a mix of humor and romance. DayWOman, because Sookie is more than a waitress, she’s a daywoman.

Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
I’ve mentioned it to my family, but no one has ever read it. My husband gives me curious looks when I ask him to translate ridiculous things in Swedish. I don’t think he likes that I stay indoors all weekend to write, but he supports me by leaving me alone to do it.

Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
All Together Dead. I Wish I Was the Moon.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
A reader sent me a PM to let me know that they wanted to get a line from my story tattooed on them. That was pretty awesome. Aside from that, I enjoy hearing when a reader tells me that my story made them feel better or got them through a tough time.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I try to reach out to that reader (if I can) to try to understand or maybe see if I can fix whatever it is that is concerning to them. If it’s something minor like a grammar mistake or what not, I’ll change it. If not, it is what it is and move on.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Just write and then get a beta. Sometimes you need to just jump in the water and get wet. You might sink or you might swim, but you’ll never know unless you do. And having a beta is like having a life raft – guiding you and keeping you afloat.

Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
I recommend anything from California Kat or Wylis. They both have a way of writing with so much depth that you get sucked into the worlds they create. They surely bring the angst, but the payoff is always worth it.

At the moment, I’m reading Dead Man’s Hand by eys1214, Come Back to Me by California Kat and Queen Sookie by my awesome beta GaijinVamp. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Outside of fanfic, I’m reading “When Pride Still Mattered: Lombardi” by David Maraniss. There is no offseason in football. ;)

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
All the usual places; fanfiction, A03, and livejournal. The links are posted on my profile. http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3325414/Alskl1ng . Feel free to stalk at will.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

And there it is. Seriously, go check her out! I can’t wait to see what else she come out with cause it’s sure to be another brilliant piece of work! Later!

New Story: Blind Oblivion

I have almost finished a new story, and sent it to my awesome new beta (Thanks Nix!). So I’m beginning to post! Yay!

It’s called Blind Oblivion and some of you may remember a teaser I posted…last year I believe. This is that story…but much better and more fleshed out. So…hopefully you’ll enjoy. I’m aiming for pretty regular updates, but I’m impatient, so I may just post as soon as I get them back from Nix. :o)

I’m sure you’re all so upset about that.

Check out Blind Oblivion here!

Author Spotlight: EricIzMine

Here we are with another spotlight. And let me tell you…this lady is epic. Epic, I tell you! She’s singlehandedly started her own following…and she’s built something of an empire. Seriously. She’s written one of my all time favorites (Saints and Sinners) and she’s come up with a pretty unique concept with her Multiverse. Okay, lets hear from her before I babble too long. I’ll babble more at the bottom-promise!

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?

Angela Mulcahy/EricIzMine…. I’m very open about my real identity, so it’s not a secret. :)

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in south-eastern Virginia. Specifically Chesapeake, but the area is known as Hampton Roads. My mother stayed at home with me and my two younger brothers and my father was a firefighter who only retired last year. I have a varied education. I’ve been referred to as Van Wilder because I couldn’t stick with a major. I concentrated on psychology, criminology, history, and drafting. I’m a stay at home mom and have six children. I live in King George, VA with my family now that my husband has left the US Navy.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I’m always writing.

What are some things you never leave home without?
The smart-ass answer is ‘car keys’, but I assume you meant travel… If I’m ever not home overnight, my computer goes with me.

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
I’m a whore for classics. My library consists mostly of older books. My children laugh at me for reading ‘dead people stuff’, and that doesn’t count the Vampire genre.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
Supernatural, Lost Girl (thanks to an evil friend), Tudors, Sopranos, How I Met Your Mother… The list goes on and on, but I rarely watch anything.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
That depends.
If I have to find a way off the island, I’m picking Bear Grylls, John Locke (the character from Lost), and James Wesley Rawles.
If the plan is to make the best of things, I’m picking Alexander Skarsgard, Russell Brand, and Brad Pitt.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Home. Always.
My bucket list is a mile long, but I live 157 miles away from my family. Home is always at the top of my list.

Do you have any pet peeves?
I have plenty of them… to shorten the list, I’ll just say that I’m a bit of a loner, so most of my peeves fall under the heading of ‘social retardation’.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I’m a devout Belieber… as in Justin Bieber… at the age of 36.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?
Not into sweets.
Silver or gold? Silver, because I prefer the simplicity.
Apple or PC? PC.
White wine or red wine? Neither. I don’t drink.
Liquor or beer? .
Coffee or tea? Iced tea, extra lemon, please.
Sleep in or get up early? It doesn’t matter what time I wake up, or how much sleep I’ve gotten, I don’t come to life until sunset.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?

I started writing my first story after devouring the first eight SVM stories in a spree, then reading all the fanfic available on a Trubie wiki… then the ninth book came out and I medicated my upset from that book by writing.

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
I’ve considered playing with Supernatural fanfics, but I’m struggling to keep my AH and Canon characters separate.

What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I live at my desk with my computer.

Ever write in your PJs?
All the time.

How bout naked? :o)
Not recently, but yes. I’ve been known to.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
I’m not sure. Things just happen in my mind, but yes, there are a lot of little pieces of me peppered into my writing.

Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
My schedule is 24/7… I write until I can’t keep my eyes open.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
Planned. Always planned, organized chaos. There are aspects that I don’t plan, but the bones are always set.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
I scream and yell. Conniptions and hissies! I mope and sulk. I turn to my betas. I mope some more. Then yell a little extra… Eventually, once I get past it, I feel like I’ve given birth.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Not really.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I’m not at all confident about my lemons. Those are the usual reason for writers’ block.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Having readers confuse how I’ve written a character for how another writer has written them. It’s epically frustrating to have someone hate one of ‘my’ characters based on things he hasn’t done in the scope of any of my stories.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Yes and no…. more thought/planning goes into some.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Eric. Hands down. I’ve been in his head (my version of it) for years now. I’m not sure I could get out of it if tried.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
The only one I’m really writing right now is the MultiVerse. I do consider the series to be one story, rather than 16 (so far). I really enjoyed writing Bored To Death, but I had to force myself away from Meanwhile while I wrote it. I wanted to get to the skip between versions so badly… Now I switch back and forth really often. It really is just one story.

Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
My family knows I write fanfic. My mother is afraid to read my lemons though. I managed to talk her into reading It Can’t Be because it’s very PG, but now she’s angry that I left her hanging. She threatens to join the BratPack to start an uprising.

Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
My favorite SVM book was Club Dead… And my fave True Blood episode is still Escape From Dragon House. Our first meeting with Eric. Skarsgard’s personification of the aloof and beautiful Eric Northman is just phenomenal and in my opinion, the execution of his introduction was perfect.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
My ego might as well have a battery operated pump when someone tells me that they love the MultiVerse more than the original SVM, but to be perfectly honest, I get really sappy about hearing that one of my readers was going through something difficult and escaped into my writing. That, to me, is the ultimate compliment because that’s exactly what a well-told story should do, take you into that world.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
Privately, I scream and rant and throw things and type out really long ‘fuck you and your opinion’ replies… and then… I grow up, delete my juvenile rant/reply, and realize everyone has the right to their opinion. Hopefully, most people think I handle criticism in stride.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Betas. A Beta can make or break a story. An amazing story can be lost in a sea of common mistakes. On average, there are no less that 20 typos in every chapter that I put out. It’s nt because I’m stupid or uneducated. It’s because my brain and fingers don’t work at the same speed. And it’s vital to have someone else read the material before it’s posted because the story developing in the writer’s mind might not translate for mass consumption. I have amazing Betas, but that hasn’t always been the case. You can see a marked difference between chapters written before and after I found the lovely ladies who keep me on my toes. In fact, one of my betas found several typos in this interview.

Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
I actually stopped reading fanfic for the time being. I haven’t read a new story in over a year (but I have a mountain of stories I’ll read eventually). I most recently read Fahrenheit 451 again.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
The BratPack on FaceBook is the best place to find news about what I’m up to and when to expect new chapters, but my WP, ericizmine.com, is where I post everything.

I’m a brat and I love interacting with all the other brats. It’s an awesome place to be! I can’t say enough good things about this lady! I have no idea how she does all that she does…it’s astounding. So go check her out!

<3 :o)

Author Spotlight: alyanne1375

Wow…so yeah I’m a complete and total fail, huh? I say I’m gonna do a spotlight on Wednesdays and Saturdays…and I space completely on this past Wednesday’s post. Bad Kelpie, BAD! And now it’s waaaay late on Saturday…double bad!

But here I am with an awesome, fairly new author. I first found her story Winds of Change, which was for the ‘I Write the Songs’ contest. Seriously good story, btw. Lets dive right in and hear from her though.

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?

My given name is Alyssa, but growing up with that name was not easy since it wasn’t popular until the late 90’s and I was born in the mid 70’s. Most of my close friends call me by an abbreviated version, Lyss. My cute as a button niece calls me Wyssa, but I usually go by Alyanne or just Aly on FF.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I don’t think I’m very interesting but here goes. I’m an out of work (hoping to remedy this by fall) Middle School Science teacher. I currently work part time in a franchise that offers educational enrichment programming in science. Its part educational, part entertainment and all fun! If I got paid more I’d do this full time, but alas. I’m a single thirty something and I help my recently single brother with my four year old niece.

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
I work and job hunt. I baby sit my niece whenever needed and generally stay home a lot to avoid spending money I don’t have. So plenty of time for writing!

What are some things you never leave home without?
My money clip, which has all my money ID and random cards I may need and my purse, it holds everything else.

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
Oooo…I love this question. Okay, by far my favorite author and book series of ALL time is Tamora Pierce and her many wonderful books about the land of Tortall. I first ran across her first book, Alanna: The First Adventure, when I was in Junior High (you know back before they were called ‘middle’ schools). And since then I’ve been a devoted fan and have read almost every book she’s written (that I know of). I also love the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rolling and the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. I also enjoy reading Nora Roberts. How she comes up with so many diverse characters, all with various backgrounds and layers, I’ll never understand but will continue to envy and buy.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
I actually don’t get HBO, so I only ever get the opportunity to watch True Blood when they release the seasons to video, which means I’m always a day late and dollar short from everyone else. I usually try to avoid a lot of Drama because I get enough from my brother in his ‘real’ life so I tend to go more for the reality competition shows. My favorites include, So You Think You Can Dance (in the summer), Dancing with the Stars, and currently I’m watching Face Off. I love watching people create something from nothing. That show truly fascinates me. I also love the crime/humor shows like Bones and CSI:NY. Okay I know those aren’t particularly funny but I like the science involved and I do find some of the dialoge on those shows a riot! (I’m weird, what else can I say.)

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Okay, I think any red-blooded woman with eyes would know why my first choice would be Alexander Skarsguard (sp?), I guess if I were stranded on a deserted island with him I’d have to talk to him eventually which is fine because I bet he’d be interesting to talk to but I’d probably just stare for the first few days. Second, I’d choose David Boreanas (sp?) for the same reasons as I’d pick A. Skars….he’s just nice to look at. Last I’d choose Amy Adams. I LOVE her! Not the same way as I LOVE the other two but she has such pretty hair (I have this weird attraction toward red heads- don’t have a clue as to why) and I also think she’d be nice and interesting to talk to.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Hmmmmm……I actually have a list and I’ve managed to already check a few off but next I’d like to visit Ireland (maybe it’s my obsession with red heads?) and New Zealand. I know that’s two places but like I said I have a list…..it’s kinda long….be lucky I only mentioned the two. I could prattle on for days on this subject.

Do you have any pet peeves?
Yes, unfinished stories! I hate that! Damn people, if you’re not going to finish a story take it down until you do decide to finish it, if at all. Its soooo annoying to get really into the plot of a good tale and then it stops dead. UGH! It’s just slightly worse that reading a story that only updates once every 6 months or so. I’ve gotten burned enough that before I read a story I always check 3 things, the word count, the publish date, and when it was last updated.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I keep a toothbrush and mouthwash in my car. If I’m on a particularly long trip, I’ll dry brush my teeth while I’m driving. You should see some of the weird looks I’ve gotten.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not. (I can’t pick just one so I’m gonna do them all and let you choose.)
Chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla if it’s ice cream and milk chocolate for everything else.
Silver or gold? Both! I look best in gold jewelry b/c of my skin tone but I love the simplicity of silver. Brushed silver is beautiful in picture frames.
Apple or PC? I’ve never really tried Apple for any length of time but I know the set up is totally different than my PC but I’d still be willing to give it a shot.
White wine or red wine? I don’t drink alcohol of any kind (unless you count what I get in cough syrup) so this and the next are a ‘no opinion’.
Liquor or beer?
Coffee or tea? I prefer Chai tea or Sweet tea. (I am southern after all.) I can’t stand the taste of coffee because it’s way too bitter for my sensitive palate.
Sleep in or get up early? I’m a night owl so I’m always burning the midnight oil. I know being a teacher is kinda the opposite scheduling wise by I’m a riddle of contradictions.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?

I started quite recently actually. Wind of Change is my first story and it was originally intended as just a one shot for the ‘I Write the Songs’ contest. I got this idea I hadn’t really seen anywhere else so I thought I’d give it a whirl. It’s kinda taken on a life of its own at this point.

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
I won’t say no, never. But at this point, I’m going to stick with SVM. As much as I adore the books by Tamora Pierce, as I stated above, I think writing any FF for her already brilliant work would be almost sacrilege to my inner ‘tween’ that first discovered her books and found a heroine..I thought there could be something added to or improved upon with the SVM series so that’s where I’ll stay for now.

What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I usually write in my room on my PC while sitting sideways on my big ugly chair. Sometimes when I’m going out or I just need that tactile sensation, I’ll use my pencil and note pad to write in because I don’t own an iPad or anything ‘modern’ like that. I don’t like to do it often unless I need it for inspiration because I HATE rewriting stuff!

Ever write in your PJs?
Often and with gusto!

How bout naked? :o)
LOL! *grins like the Cheshire Cat* Maybe, perv.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing? Where does anyone get inspiration?
I pull from my surroundings and the people I know and love. I have written a few of my own experiences especially where my niece is concerned. I have a scene early in I think chapter 2 or 3 of Winds of Change (WOC) where ‘Sarah’ is wearing Sookie’s bra, panties, and high heel shoes after playing ‘dress up’ that is an exact telling of what my mother and I caught my niece doing when she was two. In fact she still likes to wear my shoes particularly my heels, around the house. It’s adorable.

Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
Not really but I do try to keep a chapter a week as my norm. If I don’t my readers tend to get antsy. And I refuse to be one of ‘those’ writes that starts a project and then abandons it.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I’m not much of a planner when it comes to writing. I tend to just write what comes to me as it comes. I keep most of it or at least the general direction and plot points locked in my head.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
I usually go clean something or I walk and clear my head. Sometimes I just have to wait until inspirations hits me upside the head.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Not really.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I’m not interested in writing horror and I can’t take suspenseful stories and since I’m constantly ratting myself out I’m no good writing them. Other than that, I haven’t really written much but I’m interested in seeing what else is out there. I’ve actually begun writing a period piece set at the beginning of WW2, but I won’t be posting that until I get a much better grip on where I’m going with it.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
The hardest thing I think is keeping up the pace of once a week updates. That’s why I’m going to write until I’m almost finished with my next story before I begin posting it. That way I can post as often as I want and just worry about editing. I know that’s what California Cat has done and since I LOVE her work and the frequency she updates, I’ve decided to do the same. This also cuts down on the possibility of not finishing the story. If I don’t post until it’s done or almost there, then I don’t have to worry about not finishing.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
Sometimes I use catch phrases or song titles for the chapters but I always try to have them match the content of that chapter so the reader has an idea of what’s going to happen.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Sookie. I think that’s why I started reading the books to begin with. I saw a few episodes of the first season of True Blood and had a desire to read the books, which in my opinion are ALWAYS better than the movie or TV show. Anyway, Sookie’s life and character in the first few books is very similar to my own, which made her so relatable to begin with. Though I’m not telepathic or Christian, and I like to hope I’m not as whiny as she’s gotten, most of the rest is very similar. I too have an obnoxious, idiot, man-whore of a brother (at least he was before he got married and started a family). I lost my beloved Grandmother in a horrible car accident when I was 17 and took a really long time to get through it. I’ve had very few relationships with men and the first ended badly…not as bad as Sookie’s but it felt that way at the time. I also grew up in a small southern town where everybody knew me, and my family, and you couldn’t sneeze without someone knowing about it across town five minutes later.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
Since I’ve only really written the one multi-chapter and two one shots, I’m going to say I haven’t written enough to have an answer to this question yet. Although my other one shot entry for the ‘I Write the Songs’ contest, ‘Where Ever You Will Go’, was especially dear to me. After nearly twenty years, it helped me gain some closure on my grandmother’s death.

Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
Not really. They seem to view it as just a hobby and believe I could be spending my time on more productive pursuits. Hence the verbal diarrhea I’ve been exposing you lovely readers too.

Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
I LOVED book four, Dead to the World! (Doesn’t every one?) I think it’s truly telling of Eric’s core personality without all the masks he’s required to wear because of vampire society and the thousand years of being virtually alone he’s had to endure. I also think this book proved just how shallow Sookie can be and how uneducated she truly is. A basic Psych 101 class in college could have helped her figure this issue out. After the first season of True Blood and they started to veer so far away from the original books I just lost interest in the story.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
Don’t know. I’m still waiting for one that really stands out. Although, I consider it a pretty large compliment whenever anyone leaves a review, no matter how small it is. It always makes my day.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
I feel people are entitled to their opinion and I know one day I’m liable to press someone’s buttons wrong. I just try to see it as a way to improve and not let it be personal.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Write what you know and if you can’t write what you know then write what you like. Write for your entertainment and your benefit. In the end your opinion is the only one that truly matters. If others like it too then that’s great, but ultimately nothing more than gravy.

Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
Anything by Missy Dee, you just can’t go wrong with her stuff and she’s amazing! I’m addicted to EricIzMine’s Multiverse so if you’re one of the few in this fandom that have yet to read it yet do so now! I’m also enjoying Birds of a Feather by chicpea, War at Heart by ChannelAddict, Nowhere to now Here by MegMacD, the Tilted Kilt by My Secret O (love all her stories), and The Playground by makesmyheadspin. A few of these authors are known for their very spicy lemons so if you’re not of age, you didn’t hear about them from me.

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
I don’t have a word press site so you can really only find me on FF for now. Maybe in the future if I get the inkling and knowhow to set up a word press account I’ll definitely let it be known but for now FF is it.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!

Thank you so much for asking and taking the time to listen to me ramble.

And there it is…the end of yet another great interview. Well…the interview-ee anyways. :) go check her out and leave her some love! Peace yo!

…yeah I have no idea…

Author Spotlight: Belleviolette

Okay, out next spotlight is for a girl who is very special to me. Not because I know her in real life or have had much interaction with her at all, but she was the first author that I ever reviewed that actually responded! It made me feel so good to know that someone was actually reading and appreciating the fact that I liked their story.

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?

I’m Keri, aka Belleviolette :)

So, tell me a little about yourself.
Well, let’s see. I’m 32 and Canadian (born and bred in Montreal). I’ve loved writing for fun since I was little, but only stumbled onto fanfic when I started reading the SVM books. I read the stories for quite awhile before I took the plunge and started writing my own. I’m a self-professed nerdgirl, who loves to live in the fantasy world rather than RL (well, really, who doesn’t?). I’m a trained graphic designer/illustrator who has gotten a little off-track in life. Trying to get back on is tricky, but I’m working on it. :)

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
It sounds obvious, but I read like a maniac! Lol. I’m also very artistic, so I paint, draw, etc. And since I’m a good little Canadian girl, I relish the winter because of hockey season. I love it!

What are some things you never leave home without?
My iPhone, my e-reader, and a notebook. I find sometimes ideas strike you in the weirdest places, so it’s good to have just in case. I also have a serious makeup addiction (no thanks to being raised by an Avon lady), so I can’t leave without my makeup bag. Sounds silly, I know, but I can’t help it!! :)

What are some of your favorite (non-SVM) books?
My absolute favorite books aside from SVM are definitely the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. I think she’s brilliant, and she inspires me everyday. I also loves John Green and anything he writes.

Favorite (non-True Blood) TV shows and movies?
I’m a proud Supernatural fangirl! Those boys are practically part of my family after 8 seasons. I love Generation Kill (who can blame me, right?). I am a huge Doctor Who fan (which makes me a Whovian, heh heh). I love absolutely everything Joss Whedon has touched, so Buffy, Firefly, and The Avengers are definite musts. My favorite movie is Almost Famous, because it still makes me cry. I’m not ashamed!

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Oh, that is an evil question! Okay, I’m trying to control my little fangirl heart when I answer, but it’s not working! Alexander Skarsgard! There! I said it! Because he’s ridiculously beautiful, and still seems to have a brain in his head. Dave Grohl because he’s a brilliant musician. And Tom Hiddleston. Again, because he’s adorable, but is genuinely the happiest celebrity I’ve ever seen. Dave can serenade us all. Lol.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
You’re going to laugh, but Sweden. I want to LIVE there. I’ve been obsessed with visiting since I was little and had a morbid fascination with Abba. I blame my parents. Of course, it helps that Stockholm is filled with Skarsgårds! * giggles *

Do you have any pet peeves?
I hate ego more than anything. I think it’s the source of a lot of other bad qualities in people, like thinking you know more than someone else. Ego makes people mean, and makes them patronize others around them. It makes me ill. Especially when egotistical men talk down to women like we’re second-class citizens.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
I have bird fear. Not the cute little hoppy ones, but gulls and crows and whatnot. I blame Hitchcock.

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla. At least for cake and ice cream.
Silver or gold? Silver. Gold makes me look trashy, for some reason.
Apple or PC? Apple, but I’m poor, so I have to settle for PC.
White wine or red wine? White. Red gives me migraines :(
Liquor or beer? Depends on the mood. I did get into the rum last night, though!
Coffee or tea? COF-FEE.
Sleep in or get up early? I am NOT a morning person. I’ll sleep whenever, and wherever I can!

Okay, now for the good stuff.
Why and when did you start writing fanfics?

I’ve lived all over Ontario in the last few years, before moving back to Montreal. Different things brought me to different places, but I was living in Kitchener (about an hour past Toronto) in 2010 when I started reading fanfics. I never knew how much wonderful talent was out there! It just inspired me. I used to write on my own a lot when I was growing up, but I hadn’t in quite awhile. Reading other peoples’ work made me decide to give it a shot again, just to see if I could. It was so liberating, and made me so happy! Hearing peoples’ feedback keeps me going. The community is so supportive, it makes me proud to be a part of.

Besides SVM/True Blood, is there another book, TV show or movie that you would write for?
I would LOVE to do the BDB series, but I know J.R. Ward isn’t one to condone fanfics based on her characters. Which is completely fine, I fully respect her decision. But I would love to sink my teeth (no pun intended) into those characters. Again, she’s brilliant, so I’m not even sure I could do it justice.

What kind of environment do you write in? Do you prefer using a pen and paper, a computer or some sort of mobile device to write?
I need utter quiet, and usually need to write late at night when the world is asleep. I’m not one to even write with music playing. Maybe it’s my child-like attention span? Lol. I type on my laptop, quite often when I’m laying in bed! I type faster than I write by hand, so it’s more comfortable on the computer.

Ever write in your Pjs?
Anytime I come home and intend to stay in for the duration, I’m in my Pjs! So the answer is yes, all the time, for sure!

How bout naked? :o)
Nah, it gets too nippy! Haaaaa ;)

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
I think if I were writing a story that was completely angst-ridden, then I’d be pulling from my own life a lot more. I guess, since I use writing as an escape, I tend to go for more romantic tales than anything. I’m dreadfully single (yes, I hate being single, it sucks), so I tend to write the male character (cough, ERIC) as what I’d want in a partner. I suppose that’s the benefit of writing your own stories… the characters can be whoever you want them to be.

Do you write on a schedule? If you do, how do you keep to that schedule?
I don’t think there’s anything I do in life that is on a schedule! I tend to be a little scatterbrained.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I do plan things out, at least a few chapters in advance. But I never stick to it. I always end up veering far, far away from my original plans.

How do you deal with potential writers block?
I’ve been dealing with horrible writer’s block for awhile. I think it’s mainly because I psych myself out too much sometimes. We are our own worst critics, and sometimes when I’m writing, I’m so convinced that it sucks, that it won’t make sense to the readers. When that happens, I tend to lose my train of thought to the point where I just have to stop and walk away. I suppose the way I deal with it, is by getting messages and support from readers. It just reminds me that I’m doing alright. Then, I suck it up, and go back to the story. I’m working through a horrible block now, so we’ll see if it works ;)

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
Not especially, but I suppose that I make sure I have everything I need within reaching distance so I don’t have to get up and break concentration. Drink, perhaps food, and my notebook. Nothing much else, though. I don’t have to write in lucky underwear or anything, hee hee. :)

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I am terrible at writing angst, purely because I don’t like it. To each his own, of course, but I need to be in a happy place, and I figure life is full of enough angst on its own! I’m a kittens, happy little clouds, and fluffy romance kinda girl. :)

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
For me, writing canon stories are the toughest. The one I’m working on now, I’ve never been so intimidated. I’m terrified I’ll get the details wrong, or I won’t write a character correctly. I know this is obviously my own take, and I’m writing my own perceptions, but I want to do the stories – and the series – justice.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
My methods are not very original, I’m afraid! I use song titles, like so many others.

Which character do you identify with the most?
Sookie, for sure. I think in my current story especially. It’s the romantic notion of ‘how can such a powerful, beautiful creature fall for a mere mortal like me’? I think it’s why women are so receptive to paranormal romances. To be chosen, to be loved by this gorgeous, mythical creature… who wouldn’t fall for it?

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
While I had a ball writing my first story, Chance Encounters, I think I’m really in love with Spellbound the most. Again, because I’m a sucker (haha) for the paranormal romances. I love the concept best because I incorporated the idea of “Beauty and the Beast” into it. Fairy tales are a part of everyone’s childhood, and to be able to wrap that into the SVM world has been a lot of fun.

Do you talk to your family about your writing? How do they feel about it?
My family is aware of it, and I guess they are supportive of me being creative, but they just don’t get the fan fiction thing. I hate the awful stigma that surrounds it. People think the worst of fanfic writers, like we’re the ultimate losers or something. I think it’s really sad that most of the ridicule (in my experience, anyway) comes from the people who have no true passion in life, and haven’t even cracked a book outside of school. Very sad.

Which is your favorite SVM book? Favorite True Blood episode?
My favorite SVM book is a lot of peoples’ favorite! Dead To The World, for sure. I am and will always be an Eric lover, which is why this book is the most dog-eared on my shelf. * Le sigh *
My favorite True Blood episode is in season 2, I Will Rise Up. The series took a lot of liberties, but having Godric as Eric’s maker was genius. To see Eric beg him not to meet the sun… I cry every time. And it’s such an important character development for Eric, too, showing what a big heart he has for those close to him.

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
I got a PM once, and I hate that I can’t remember who it was from. Last year, I went through a lot of crap in my personal life, and ended up not writing for a long time. But this message I got, it was telling me how profoundly she loved the story, and how talented I was. She was encouraging me not to give up, and to remind me there were a ton of people out there who love and support me. It made me realize how lucky I was, and how much I love the writing community.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
Honestly, I’ve been really, really lucky. In 3 stories, I’ve gotten maybe 3 negative-ish reviews. I just don’t respond. The last one I got was from someone reading Spellbound, who told me she hates how soft Eric is, and how mushy the story was. So, why read it? Why are you bothering to comment on that? If I don’t like a story, I stop reading. Nobody is forcing you! Just sayin’.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Don’t think, just do! A RL friend of mine is just getting into True Blood and fanfics. She’s always wanted to write, but she’s a little nervous about it. I say, why wait? There are so many wonderful people out there to encourage you, why not do something that makes you happy? I’m certainly one of the many who would welcome a PM if someone needed some advice, or words of encouragement. My door, so to speak, is always open! :)

Have any recommendations? What are you reading at the moment?
Staying in the fanfic realm, of course, there are so many to choose from! I adore anything from MissyDee. She’s got a wonderfully dirty mind, which makes me love everything she does, of course! Makesmyheadspin is fantastic, I love her! Maybe I’m partial, but I love anything Gabrielleblue does. You would never know English is not her first language, yet she writes circles around me!
I’m reading mainly fanfic right now. I’m almost finished Need, by Sheba6086. It’s so romantic and lovely. Just what I need right now.
For books, I just finished another J.R. Ward novel, Heart of Gold. I loved it, too, but again, I love everything she does. ;)

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
Yes, please feel free to drop me a line! I’m on Twitter, @belleviolette1. I’m on every now and again.
I’m mostly on Tumblr, though. You can find me under HuntersandVikings.tumblr.com.
And of course, Belleviolette on ff.net.
:)

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thanks for thinking of me, Kelly! You’re awesome! <— awwwww thank you!

Xoxo Keri :)

Author Spotlight: scribeninja

Here is officially my last banked spotlight from last year. I think. I’ve scoured my computer so hopefully everything is A-OK.

This wonderful gal is another one that just gives me warm fuzzies when I re-read her stuff. Don’t know why. It speaks to me, shall we say. So let’s hear from her, shall we?

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I’m a 24 year old working in a restaurant with a bunch of guys, which is probably why I also curse like a sailor. I didn’t go to college, but I’d love to study something someday. I love movies, marathoning TV shows, and finding new music.

What do you do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I’m working, sleeping, or in the middle of a marathon of a TV series. ChanelAddict just got me into Fringe, so that’s what I’m watching right now. The last thing I finished was How I Met Your Mother.

Do you pull experiences from your real life into your writing?
Definitely! Every single story or one-shot I’ve written myself has been inspired by something from real life. It could be something big, or it could be something tiny that I built around, but everything comes from something real. A surprising amount of stuff actually comes from conversations I have with the guys at work.

How do you come up with your titles?
I’m AWFUL at coming up with titles, and more often than not, I have help. Going with a song title is usually a safe bet though. Most of the time I beg makesmyheadspin to put on Jethro, her magical iPod, and find me a title.

Ultimate girl question: chocolate or vanilla?
Chocolate!

Besides SVM, do you have another series of books that you love or that you’d ever write fanfics for?
I’ve honestly never had the urge to write fic for any other book series. With SVM, I only wrote one canon fic, and it was BAD. Please don’t go look for it and read it. The only reason it’s still up is that I’m too lazy to delete it. Writing All Human is such a different animal. You can do it in a very clever way that parallels the storylines in the books, or you can go totally off in your own little world and essentially play Barbies with Eric and Sookie (or whichever characters you ship.)
So I guess it just depends on what you want to do with the characters. I’ve never wanted to play with the characters from any other series, because I’ve just never gotten that inspiration or feeling that I need to add to what’s there.

What is the best compliment you’ve received on your writing?
I used to think it was if I made someone cry, and not in a mean way! Simply because it’s amazing knowing you can get that kind of emotion out of people. Now I think it’s when someone tells me they’d buy my stories if I published. To think that anyone would spend their hard earned money on something I wrote makes me want to cry.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Write. Write whenever you can. You really only get better with practice, and a good beta. And write whatever’s in your head. If you have an idea speaking to you that’s been done before, who cares? It’s in you, so you write it. Make it your own! And definitely, definitely find a good, honest beta. Learn from your mistakes.

What sort of Starbuck’s concoction would your characters order?
Gah! I can’t answer this because I don’t drink coffee, and have no idea what you can get at Starbucks. Though usually my Sookies love coffee, so I’ll just say coffee, haha.

Tell us something random about yourself.
I cry. All the time. At everything. If I’m too happy, I cry. If I’m too sad, I cry. If I’m telling someone about something sad or happy, I’ll cry. Basically, I should always have tissues on me.

What kind of environment do you write in?
My bedroom, where I’m most comfortable, and I prefer it to be clean. If I have a super messy room I can’t concentrate.

Tell the truth. Do you ever write naked?
Ha! Never naked, but I have written in a robe.

Where can you be found online?
Mostly I’m on twitter and tumblr.
twitter.com/scribeninja
scribeninja.tumblr.com
I have a wordpress, and most of my stories are there, but I hardly ever post.
scribeninja.wordpress.com

Anything else you’d like to tell?
I just want to thank you for even wanting to do this spotlight on me. I want to thank every single person in the fandom for simply being here. This fandom has grown so much in the five years I’ve been in it, and so much good has come from it. Personally, I’ve made lifelong friends and been given the chance to experience things I wouldn’t have without these people.

Also, be kind to each other. That is all :)

There ya go. Another awesome author to go check out!
