Story Spotlight: Confessions

Title: Confessions
Author: kjwrit
Fandom: TB/SVM
Rating: M
AU/Canon/AH: AU
Complete? yes

Summary: A two-part (maybe three-part) mini-fic in the True Blood universe because my OCD and Sooric loving heart can’t stand unanswered questions.

It picks up a short time after Bill’s death in the final episode of True Blood and fills in the blanks that lead up to the Thanksgiving Day feast in Sookie’s yard.

Rated M, AU, and all that jazz.

My oh-so-humble thoughts
As usual, kjwrit has done it again. She’s managed to write such a perfect fic…this time as a post season 7 fix.

Seriously, nothing she does is ever remotely in the realm of ok-it’s all awesomesauce. And this is even more awesomesauce and I can’t quite believe I missed it…how the fuck did that happen?!?

Her humor and wit comes through so well, and she’s evolved Eric and Sookie in a completely organic way-without making either of them ridiculously fucktarded, tools or douches. Well, okay Eric has a slight douchey moment, but I can’t really fault her for that cause of…

Nope. No spoilers. *evil grin* It’s a three parter, but I read it all in about an hour last night as I was laying awake. Okay so I was sleepy, but I just couldn’t stop and somehow it was 2.30 before I managed to finish it. But it was worth it. :) So, go check out this story (and all her others, cause let’s face it-she’s the bomb) and leave her some love and SkarPorn. I swear she lives on that shit!!

AU/Canon/AH: canon from season 6
Complete? yes

Summary: “I said that I didn’t know I was going to stake Bill and it’s true. I surprised even myself tonight. But, Eric… you need to know… the fact that I didn’t see it coming doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t do this again” – alternative ending of the s6e1. One shot.

My oh-so-humble thoughts
So much wow. Seriously. Anything this chick writes is like gold, but this…sigh. I haven’t read a “fix” fic for season 6 in a while and honestly I remember why. They tend to be unrealistic. But this one is a completely viable fic. I can see this happening-ya know, if the writer’s didn’t suck so much.

Seriously, why aren’t more of our fanfic ladies writing for shows?!?! Anyhoo, this is a perfectly accurate story in terms of characterization. But she’s maneuvered them into suiting her needs, without taking away from them.

Yeah. It’s a one shot so a quick read. And one that you should seriously go read like now.

Story Spotlight: Electric Limbo

Summary: Reworked from start to finish – re-read required. Rivalry between two of Bon Temps oldest families ends when they team up to keep their businesses alive … but the rivalry with others in the same business just begins. Geek-centric fluff with a large side order of comedy. Warnings for Star Trek quotes, WoW references and Eric being a huge Thundercats fan. :o) AH/OOC.

My oh-so-humble thoughts
OHMYGAAAAAAAHHHHHHH…

I am so fucking excited to be able to tell you about this fic. Seriously. This is like geekdom to the infinity and I love it so so so so so so SO much! I read it a long time ago, but she recently reworked it and finished it. And dude. The rework-so much geek! It’s awesome!

I’m not super entrenched in some of the geek stuff she included, but I know enough to at least get the references. That being said-dude. I can’t even stop gushing about this because I don’t think I’ve ever read such a geekcentric fic that wasn’t overpowered by it. Usually the references seem kinda forced, but not here.

So yeah, this is definitely going in my “reread” file (not that I have an actual file, but I do have a folder on goggle drive…). I only have like 6 stories in that file so that should tell you about how much I actually like, no-love this fic. So go read and leave her some love cause…ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Summary: I think my inspiration for this was another trip to the salon, and no, I only got my hair done! (you’ll understand my reason for clarifying once you read, lol).

My oh-so-humble thoughts
OH.MY.GOD. This might be the pinnacle of my week-seriously, this story…. *hold for a moment while I compose myself*

Okay, now-yeah, this one shot is so many shades of awesome!!! I have so many things I could say, but I don’t want to ruin the brilliant amazingness that she’s managed to put together.

Let me just say, as a frequent patron of….this kind of thing…this story rocked so much. I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard at a fic in so long…and then had to stifle moans in the gym sauna cause of how hot it was…and no, not the sauna. Yeah it switches gears quickly, but amazingly smoothly.

Ugh, I can’t even put into words how much you should really go read this. Seriously. Now. Go.

Author Spotlight: VictoryInTrouble

Hallo lovelies! I am bringing you another completely awesome author to check out. This chick writes for the TB/SVM fandom and her story Northman’s Nanny is another one of those that brought me back into the fandom. She writes real for lack of a better way to put it. Her characters are more real than a lot of real people I know, which is a feat. So, yeah. She rocks and I’m gonna shut up so you can read what she has to say. :)

Let’s start with an introduction. I’m Kelly, or as more people know me, Kelpie.
And you are?
HI! I’m VictoryInTrouble. Some people call me Vic, but I don’t put my real name online.

So, tell me a little about yourself.
I am in my 30s, I have two boys who make me smile and want to tear my hair out sometimes, a husband who makes me laugh and want to strangle him sometimes, and a dog who I love but could give away at times. I have never been a writer before this last year. In fact, I used to hate writing but I never really tried to do any creative writing. It was mostly reports and essays. Writing creatively is much more fun!

What do you do with yourself when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I am taking care of my family, reading, watching TV, drawing, or my current obsession- making banners now that I can work photoshop somewhat well.

What are some things you never leave home without?
My purse, my kid’s epipen, phone, a hair elastic, and chapstick!

What are some of your favorite books?
My genre of choice is science fiction so my favorites reflect that. I love Darwin’s Radio and sequel by Greg Bear(or anything by him, really), The Entire and The Rose series by Kay Kenyon, Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress, The Time Traveler’s Wife though the movie was not so great. I also love murder mysteries and Mary Higgins Clark was always my favorite author for that. Sometimes I want fun so I read Janet Evanovich or a sexy romance novel. I am in a book club and while I wouldn’t pick out most of the books we read, my favorite has been Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Brunt.

Favorite TV shows and movies?
TV shows I currently enjoy are New Girl, Doctor Who, Modern Family, Blackish, Marco Polo, How To Get Away With Murder, Walking Dead. Older shows that I can watch again and again are Jeeves and Wooster, Coupling, Gavin and Stacy. My favorite movie is A Fish Called Wanda.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and had 3 famous people with you, who would you choose and why?
Dominic Monaghan because he’s a crazy adventurer, he could handle anything creepy crawly or deadly, and he’s a little cutie.

Alexander Skarsgard because he’s sexy as hell, also likes adventure, and his massive body could keep me warm at night.

Jem Stansfield from the BBC show Bang Goes the Theory, because he’s super smart, a crazy inventor, and he’s also pretty cute.

What is 1 place you’d love to visit?
Greece. I’ve always wanted to go there.

Do you have any pet peeves?
My pet peeves are liars, people who are obnoxiously loud in a public place where it is inappropriate, and loud chewers and breathers. My husband says I have mouse hearing but he’s just loud!

What are some of your favorite foods? How ‘bout comfort foods?
My favorite foods are those that mix lots of different tastes together. So I love soups and big salads, I love Thai and Korean food. I’m an adventurous eater so there isn’t much I don’t like. Comfort foods would be my mom’s cheese pie or collard greens, my husband’s sage stuffing or pho– things that I’ve been eating for a long time and always bring good memories.

What’s your favorite scent-one that says “home” to you?
Hmm, I don’t know if I have one but I like vanilla and coconut.

What kind of music do you like? Any you absolutely can’t stand?
I like all kinds of music. Right now I seem to be into music with a strong male lead- Tom Odell, Ed Sheeran, Hozier, Paolo Nutini, Amos Lee, and my all time fav is Chris Isaak.

Tell me one random thing about yourself.
When I was a child I wanted to be a clown when I grew up…now they scare the sh*t out of me!

Just for some insight into you pick one. Feel free to tell why or not.
Chocolate or vanilla?  chocolate if it’s good quality, but not for ice cream
Silver or gold? silver
Apple or PC? Apple
White wine or red wine? White, can’t drink red unless it’s Lambrusco because that’s sweet like a Moscato.
Liquor or beer? ha ha- both!
Coffee or tea?  Tea unless my husband goes and gets me coffee on the weekend
Sleep in or get up early? sleep in, definitely, if I had my choice.

Okay, now for the good stuff.
What are your preferred fandoms for writing/reading?
I’ve only ever read/written in the SVM/TB fandom. I didn’t even know fanfiction existed before 2013 when I discovered it.

What kind of environment do you write in?
Usually with music playing, in bed or on the couch. Sometimes with kids running around, though I prefer late at night when I can concentrate better.

Ever write in your PJs?
yup!

How bout naked?
I don’t think so. I have no privacy with my 3 guys so I am mostly always dressed unless the door’s locked. ;)

Where do you find inspiration for your stories? Do you pull your real life experiences into your writing?
Inspiration comes from my imagination or a picture I saw, something I witnessed. My Captive story was inspired by a Game of Thrones gif even though I don’t watch the show. My Shave and a Haircut story was inspired by a trip to the salon where I watched a man getting shaved. I definitely pull things from real life into my stories.

Do I put real life into my stories?
Yes, I sometimes will have a character’s favorite movie be mine, or favorite food, etc. I might give them a background I know something about so it’s easier to write.

Do you write on a schedule?
no, I fit it in whenever I have time.

Do you plan out your stories or just write whatever comes to you?
I like to have a general plan but it always always changes as I write. What I find more important for me and what I spend the most time on, is having a character identity. I find that if I have thought well about my character, then whatever I come up with for them will be believeable and I will be able to keep the story on track.

Do you have any writing rituals or superstitions?
I can’t think of any. I like music when I write.

Is one genre easier for you to write than another? Is there anything that you just aren’t that great at writing?
I don’t think I am that good with action. I’m also not so great with supernatural stuff. My imagination is just not there. I find romance is easier, though sex scenes are some of the toughest to write and to keep fresh and not repetitive.

What is the hardest part for you about writing fanfics?
Um, maybe because in this fandom, people like the vampire stories and I tend to write all human because it’s easier for me.

Is there a method for coming up with titles for your stories and/or chapters?
For story titles, I try to think about the theme of the story and what, overall, I want to talk about. I hardly ever do chapter titles because it’s too much effort. For Getting It On, each chapter title came from the song that went with the chapter. In Bookstore, each chapter title rhymes, but I may have shot myself in the foot with that one! We’ll see!

Which character do you identify with the most?
That’s tough…I’m not sure. I tend to play around with characters a lot. I think I identify with Sookie the way I write her but I have elements of Eric too.

Which of your stories is your favorite to write and why? Which of your stories is your favorite concept wise?
My favorite to write…that’s another tough one. I really liked writing Shave, which I just finished, because writing the letters was fun and easy. I love writing the Bookstore story because I’m writing with a good friend and she is awesome and funny and she has helped me keep the story light-hearted, which I have some trouble with on my own. Concept-wise, it may be Captive, which is a departure from what I normally do but has been a good challenge.

Do you talk to your family about your writing?
Not often.

What is your favorite book/episode in your preferred series?
I have never read the SVM books. (shocking, I know!) I didn’t discover this fandom until the series was almost finished and nobody liked the ending so I decided not to start them. As far as TB, the episode that made me sit up and say, “Wow, who is that actor?” was Ep 2:9, I Will Rise Up, so I think that’s my favorite. Once I found out about Askars, I started reading fanfiction and the rest, as they say, is history!

What is the best compliment you’ve ever received on your stories?
It’s a toss up between being told that my characters are “real,” and being told that my stories make someone feel really good.

How do you deal with the inevitable criticism?
If it’s ranting and juvenile, I laugh. I was kind of surprised when I first encountered some of the hate for Sookie that I got when she had her first fight with Eric in Northman’s Nanny. I sometimes get frustrated because a lot of times, the person just didn’t understand what was said vs. what was thought in the character’s head, which I guess is the downfall to first person perspective. That can be unclear if you don’t read closely. So a valid criticism, I will think about, a ranty one, I will laugh about. It doesn’t really bother me that much because most reviews are positive.

What is your favorite/least favorite part about your preferred fandoms?
Favorite is the fact that even though the show and books are done, the fandom is still active. Least fav is that the shows and books are done and I’m afraid everything will die down now and I feel like I just found everyone! :)

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Read a lot, look up anything you are uncertain about, and just write!

Have any recommendations?
Anything on my site under the people I follow is awesome!

And lastly, where can all your rabid readers stalk you?
I have a wordpress site, victoryintrouble.wordpress.com and I’m on fanfiction.net under the same name. I am thinking of joining facebook but haven’t yet.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions!
Thank you, Kelpie! This was fun!

So yeah, I’ve linked it all up and I’m telling you…go check her out. She’s got a bunch of stories (that I still have on my to read list-seriously that list gets longer every single frickin day!) and I can’t wait! So go read and leave her love!

Story Spotlight: Healed

Title: Healed
Author: kardamon
Fandom: True Blood/SVM
Rating: T
AU/Canon/AH: Canon, midway through season 7
Complete? yes

Summary: Sookie reacts differently when Eric comes to tell her that he’s healed.

My oh-so-humble thoughts
Okay lovelies, who was pissed at…well, almost the entirety of True Blood, if we’re honest? And who was especially enraged at the travesty that was Season 7? Hmmm….do I hear a massive chorus of “Me! Me! Me!”? Yeah that’s what I thought.

However, here’s one of the many “fix its” that was written in the wake of that…fiasco. Can you tell how I feel about this issue?? *wink* And I have to say, this may be one of my fave fixes of any season.

She’s managed to keep Sookie true to character-in my opinion-BUT she made her grow and mature into a believable better version of herself. She doesn’t take Sookie and give her a personality transplant out of left field, but she’s managed to evolve her in a completely organic way that feel true. Same with Eric. She’s unearthed the best in both characters (Bill too, though his best is more of the pathetic villain wannabe way) and still kept them true to character.

I love how she’s woven this plot together. It’s only 9 chapters and is a relatively simply written fic, sticking very close to the show…but it’s got a voice all it’s own that brings it to life and it veers away just enough to keep you engaged. Plus it fixes all the fuck ups HBO neglected to….so yeah that’s a plus. :)

But you should really go read it. I read it all during naptime so it’s not like it’ll take forever. But it’s very worth it, especially if you wanted to smash all your True Blood DVDs like I did…*blush* So go read and leave her some love!!!

2015/01/img_9034.jpg

Summary: Heiress to her father’s recording company Sookie Stackhouse returns to Bon Temps with her brother Jason after years of living in Nashville for one relaxing summer before taking over for their retiring father. Sookie realizes quickly that not much has changed in Bon Temps but Eric Northman and Bill Compton are no longer the boys she left behind. AU and AH. Romance/Humor/Angst

My oh-so-humble thoughts
Yeah so here is another supremely well done TB/SVM fic for your reading pleasure. I actually only found this fic because of a recommendation on Facebook. This chick has (somehow?!?) been flying under the radar in our little fandom. But no more!

This fic is the perfect summer fic-ironic since I found it in the dead of winter, but whatever. Now-I must warn you-there is an ungodly amount of Bill Compton in this fic because it’s an actual triangle. But she makes no apologies for it, which is actually rather refreshing. Besides she writes Douchetard Compton in such a perfectly creepy way that it’s almost amusing reading about him. Almost.

Besides that, and even in spite of it, this is still an awesome fic I’d definitely recommend to anyone who will listen. Seriously. And I never recommend fics where Bill is shown in even the slightest of good lights. Regardless, you should really go read and review cause this girl so deserves it!
